Knotweed is not a requirement, if you limit your searches to it you'll be missing patches. They are most likely to grow in any spot where flood debris accumulate, like sharp bends in the creek.

Why not water a patch if you know it is good?

Reds are below normal, good luck if you are in those areas. Sauce.
All I've seen are Pluteus sp, they must be drought tolerant.

Yeah, the graph is percent of normal, dark red is 0% and fuchsia is 600%. The first image is March, the second is April.

They always bruise, from blue to black. Pinch the end of the stem if it doesn't show bruising.

Thanks, I just posted another version. It can't hurt to take those rotten ones to seed new habitat, they might have spores in them.

I checked about a hundred debris piles yesterday, and a whole lot of knotweed, and found not a single one. Then I went closer to the stream banks and found 4 patches right out in the open growing from sandy soil. The above ground debris must fruit later in the season. Pan cincts are starting to fruit in lawns.

Doesn't the print color look purplish?
I'm not arguing with the experts. Didn't think they were active because of the non-bruising.
Oh well....back to the streams.
Look at the color of the stipes of those compared to the pics of the known ovoids. One of the giveaways is that ovoids don't have uniform color pigmentation of the stipe.

Stem butts covered in mycelium are the way to go for starting cultivated patches, just keep the mycelium wrapped in something moist during transport. You can shred the used bags in a blender and then pour it over new wild habitats. Also save the water used to rinse them off and carry it around to bless mulch piles. The power company has been leaving a lot of fresh chips behind as they cut back overgrowth around utility lines.
Any shrooms that are fresh should be printed overnight, they'll even print in the fridge for longer periods if they are kept moist. Removing them from the environment before they can drop a lot of spores reduces chances for new growth. It's easy to rinse the prints off foil into a bowl, then funnel that into a spray bottle. You'll be able to get them to good habitat better than they would by chance.

They are returning to the same patches and immediate area, that's fish in a barrel. Paul Stamets said it took him hundreds of hours to find his first actives. You should adjust your priorities so it isn't too frustrating.

Those were growing next to a debris pile. I still haven't found one growing on a debris pile this season.

I've never seen an ovoid turn up around the margin like that, koods. Has it changed after drying out?

Has anyone noticed how persistent the smell of ovoids is? The smell can hang on my fingers even after I've washed my hands.

That sycamore is awesome
 Deer.

I saw one growing in a debris pile for the first time today. I also noticed that plants had started growing in the debris around the same time, they must need similar temps.

I think the sand is working as a natural mulch bed and humidifier, like vermiculite. West coast finds are usually in mulch or woodchips, not stream banks. Another factor causing them to hang around sand might be the age of this species in the region, it hasn't had enough time to establish itself deeper in the forest where wood doesn't show up as frequently.
I'm still amazed by how their floral fragrance can permeate skin to persist after washing several times with soap and water. I wonder what the evolutionary function of that odor is. It's a great way to ID them when bluing isn't evident in the field.

The purplish color of spore deposits only seems to show up on caps. Spores look dark brown most of the time.

I saw a couple of these with what appear to be conjoined stipes at the cap.

That's funny, I did notice that springiness yesterday and wondered what was causing it. Grass roots maybe?
OvoidNoh: Boiling for 2 minutes will kill pathogens. Add 500 mg of vitamin C per 1/2 cup water as an antioxidant to protect the psilocybin. Sun dried shrooms should be fine.
