Isn't this now the official 2012 ovoid page?

Everybody says that kind of pile is a prime target, but I think they dry out too quickly because I rarely see any kind of mushroom growing on them. At least until they start getting green vegetation growing over them. On the other hand, nobody seems to talk about ovoids growing right from the creek embankments, from old buried debris. About half my finds last year were discovered right at eye level as I stood with the creek lapping my feet.

Yep, if you don't get down at mushroom level you're going to have a hard time finding these guys. Actually, I prefer hunting at dusk with a flashlight to see in those areas that are in impossibly deep shadows during the day.

I didn't see a single mushroom of any sort today, I think we need a bit more rain and it actually got below freezing last night.

You know, we talked about that last year and I don't know why the concept didn't register with me this year. The spot is perfect for that... Five minutes from home and five seconds from the creek.

Went on a fairly extended walk yesterday afternoon and was not encouraged by the fact that I discovered just as many snakes as I did fungi:

Yet another day passed without any hope of a good rain to kick off the season. Everyone else seems to be in better shape. I look at the radar obsesively. The guy on the radio used the words "drought conditions." But I still go out today, and find this corpse (it fell apart in transport):

I'm about 90% sure that these are ovoid remains. It was just sticking right out of a log. Completely dehydrated... cracker dry. This thing is at least a month old. This is what things looked like last June. Uhhgg.

The sun setting, I give up and go back to the car, light a cigarette and HOLY SHIT!!!

One is infinitely better than none, and just the boost I needed. The Mid-Atlantic Ovoid season is on!

Now for a sexy gill closeup shot:

Went out Friday evening, and once again managed to find a little cluster after I decided to give up because it was getting dark. I didn't even have my flashlight with me, so I don't know how I saw them.

It's been about 10 days with no rain, and we're now under a red flag warning. This is when the NWS declares that the forest you wish to be a lush paradise, is instead capable of spontaneous combustion. Despite the weather people's mocking, these guys looked surprisingly not dried at all. I picked the three largest fruits:

I took the stem butts and added them to my nursery. I don't know if this is common everywhere, but a majority of my finds are growing in very loose sand (almost beach like) from either a tiny piece of wood substrate or no apparent organic matter all. In the latter case, there is a very thick cord of myc that I assume extends down to some hidden debris. I think this find was close enough to the stream that capillary action up through the grains has kept things moist, even with no protection from direct sunlight.

This year is proving my intuition wrong; I've gone out assuming without any rain, the best place to look is in sheltered crevices under logs and thick, nasty overgrowth. Instead, creekside sand dunes with little vegetation seem to be best right now... plus it's soooo much easier. I'm focusing on this, and eroded creek banks until it rains again.

One more thing, be careful how you dispose of this species... those three above made my bedroom walls melt. :imslow:

After nearly a month, the rains finally came. Wednesday, an all day drizzle and then the nor'easter, the last two days. It was still raining last night and temps were in the low 40s. I went to a stream on the the way back from Home Depot. No camera, no backpack, nothing but my jacket pockets to carry anything I found.

The news is good for anyone on the east coast: the season is on RIGHT NOW! I found them everywhere I had time to look and there were more than I could take home:

I'm going for a formal hunt shortly, and I think it's gonna be a bounty.

DC areas weathers been almost 10 degrees hotter then mine but you say 40? what was the temp that day you went btw weather.com tells you the weather back to a month before the current date if you go to month view

After the rain last Wednesday, it was highs in 70s, lows in 50s until Saturday. I found a fresh patch Saturday night. It had to be from Wednesday's rain because there had been no rain for 3 weeks prior. Then the noreaster hit Sunday, started raining and temps dropped to low 50s on Sunday, and yesterday's HIGH temp was only mid 40's. Storm is gone now, got about 3 inches of rain and it's about 60 degrees out.

Those finds from yesterday were born from last week, but I suspect there has been substantial growth even with the low temps. Regardless, the ovoids are the most prevalent mushroom fruiting right now (at least in the riparian zone), by a large margin.

On Saturday, I found these less than a minute into my search of a new area, and I was back home in 10:

any one ever find ovoids in southern jersey..?

The problem I suspect you'll have in s. jersey is finding the right habitat. The forests of the coastal plain are dominated by pine and sassafras, and other shrubby vegetation. You just gotta find the hardwood hammocks. On the plus side, the soil is very sandy. Here in the DC area, ALL my finds have been in very sandy soil, especially those creekside sand bars that are built up just enough to start growing short and stubbly ground cover.

Good call then... I've seen many ovoids with caps that color.. But there is always clear bruising on everything I've picked so far this year. Actually, except for a few of those beefy pluteus and some other tall, skinny mushroom with black, perfectly flat gills, every mushroom I've encountered in the past week has been an ovoid.

I go by smell a lot too... I give them all the smell and color test. They really have an odor unlike anything else.. Very exotic.

Where are you located ttwak? I'm not seeing any pins like that any more  :undecided:

I took a bunch of pics today... I guess I should upload em before i don't.

Hey ttwak... on the bottom left of that fourth pic, there is a group of three suspected galerinas, but then there is another single cap to their left that looks dark with blue bruising. Is that an ovoid? scary!

Yeah, I saw some seriously black pins in a patch that died of thirst. May they rest in peace.

You take nice pics, btw.

My take for this evening's hunt:

I found these on Monday. They look nice and hydrated:

Today, everything seemed a lot more mature, chewed-up and getting a little dried. The benefits of the noreaster aren't going to last as long as I had hoped. I'm also concerned that I didn't see any indication of newer pins or fruits... they all looked many days old.

They can hide very well. I'm sure I missed many, and glad that many groups were revealed by a single visible specimen. Some of the more gregarious fruitings were laid out in a linear fashion, I suspect there must be a branch or log buried below. One or two fruits isolated was the most common situation, however.

The habitat of all finds so far this year has been creekside sand bars that have very short ground cover, and clumps of grasses.

For the first time ever, found some in a ticket of knotweed, which is a bit over hyped IMO. There is only one common denominator to all my finds ever (besides being near a creek) and that is SAND! No one seems to mention it. I was thinking about how it was possible that it took me three years to find what turns out to be the most common mushroom fruiting this time of year and I realize it is because I wasn't investigating sandy areas. For some reason, I assumed sand and mushrooms didn't go together. LOVE THE SAND!

Finally, here's a myco-porn money shot. This guy totally spored all over his friends.

Like I said, right now in my area, ovoids are not only common in their habitat, they are the most common mushroom encountered. The other mushrooms I see regularly are the pluteus cervina (the big beefy things growing out of huge logs) and a tall, skinny thing with VERY flat, almost black gills... and both in far fewer numbers than ovoids. If I were hunting any other species, I'd probably be saying to myself, " damn, I wish I wanted those little yellow and blue suckers cause they are everywhere!"

So, my question is to Alan: How is it that they weren't officially recognized until 2003?

I'm looking in the bag I carry them in, and the spores are definitely a deep brown... Yet, that picture of mine is also accurate, those spores had purple tint to them. Maybe they are purplish when they are hydrated, and turn more brown as they lose water?

Maybe artificial light? I just looked at the spectrum from my CFL bulb in a diffraction grating, and it has some gaps around orange, and it trails off after blue - violet is very weak. Just a theory. I can't test it because the sun is hiding behind clouds and Rain! Rain! Rain!

Did I mention it's raining?

That's what I've been sayin. Counterintuitive, because those areas seem to dry out too fast, but the sand stays wet underneath. I think early season air temps are too low without some direct heating. I just found some up the bank and into the forest today for the first time this year.

On another topic... My paper collection bag is now coated with spores, can I cut it up and bury the strips in mulch to get some new domestic patches. If not, how can I put them to use. Don't want to toss them.

Thursday night's take:

Found a really nice patch with some super gregarious residents. It literally took 20 minutes with scissors to cut away all the grass and vines so I could get good pics and not miss anything:

They were in deep ground cover, but just at the margin where the grass and beach meet.

Today, this was the only non-ovoid I saw. I've seen a few of them over the last week:

Are they easy to spot or do you have to dig around?

Those aren't ovoids. Alan knows best. They sorta look like the things that grow in the grass around here, although I havent seen them yet this year. The area you are searching looks a little too woody for these early ovoids, which are growing in very open areas. That sandbar there in your picture isn't built up enough to start growing short vegetation... That is what you are looking for, to be honest, that stream looks a little too small to target your searches.
