The time is here, once again, to get outside into the warm spring showers and find edible fungi. The weather patterns have shifted from winter to spring here in Washington, and as a result, some Verpa bohemica have started to pop up. A few small oysters were observed today as well, so it's officially hunting season again Looking forward to seeing everyone's pictures this season, and the way things are looking, it's gonna be a good one!!
Pictures from today, 3-26-2012 in the Renton WA area. Picked a good fresh pound that were all about baseball sized. Lots of little guys popping up, and many areas haven't even started yet. I'll be posting some recipes later on
These next ones are kinda special. normally i don't see V. bohemica growing straight from logs, let alone a healthy, living tree!! Gotta love those cottonwoods.

More pics from today. Things are going really good below 600' (depending on your location), and didn't take long to gather a few fresh pounds. Enjoy the pics!
Growing right next to some stinging nettles. Watch where you put your hands, or just wear some thin gloves.
Trillium: These are a good indicator. While the flowers are still white, the season is still going. Once they start turning purple, it might be time to move higher up in elevation.

How does those taste? They don't really look like something I would want to eat and I have read that they can cause slight poisonings in a few people. Do you need to cook them well?

They taste pretty good to me Kinda nutty and earthy. I haven't come across anyone that has gotten symptoms from eating them, but I know it does happen. Most of the time I dip them in beaten eggs, roll in either crushed up tortilla chips or ritz crackers, then pan fry in some butter till brown. Gonna try a corn batter (like corn dogs) later on tonight.
Good to see ya around Maynard!!
Here is what I made last night: Little bit of weed butter

You can use almost any oil or fat. Gonna try for some peanut oil this year to use when making oriental food

I've read that V. bohemica contains a chemical that does something to potentiate alcohol...... now whether it was placebo or not is in question, but eating these things i got drunk as fuck off just a few beers one night. that's the only reaction i've heard of for these....

YaY, I finally get to post something to this thread! I found these morels fruiting in my burn pile today. Now I need to get up the mountain and check all the lighting burns from last year One spot burned for a mile or more, I can't wait for that hike!
ok, enough, here's the porn.
I don't think I'll eat these, I burned a lot of yuck in that pile. It was a fun find anyway.

and here's what I did with those yummy morels... some shallots, crimini, and morel
saute minced shallots and 2 gloves garlic minced over medium heat in olive oil.
once shallots have dissolved and garlic is browned add mushrooms and saute 10 minutes.
add some butter and about half a cup of white wine
about a cup of heavy cream
Simmer over medium heat until sauce thickens, about 10 minutes. Served over baked potato instead of butter and sour cream
