I've always found rye to be more consistant with water retention. WBS seems to be inconsistant from brand to brand. Sometimes the blend is even inconsistant within the same brand. This inconsistancy is such a slight point it's not worth much thought.
You'll likely hear arguments this way and that over which is the best. It really comes down to personal preference.
In my area, WBS is cheap a 40 pound bag can be purchased for less than $10 while organic rye from my local health food store costs as much as $1.50 per pound.
Each is equally contamination resistant with proper preparation. If you PC them well, contamination should not be an issue.

Good point. A 40 pound bag of cracked corn is $6.99 at PetSmart. Even cheaper at feed stores.

What my lawn gnome usually likes to do is use ordinary dried pop corn kernel's that he bought down at the local supermarket, put them into his PC with about 3" of water from the bottom (5 litter PC) and cook them for about 1.5 hours. He let's them cool down for about 5 hours, then he takes his jar's and fill's them 12/16 full. He put's the jar's in his PC and cook's them for 1 hour each. After that he let's them cool in a large Tupperware container over night then inoculates them, and put's them strait into his incubator and he usually see's life between 3 to 5 day's. This is just a simple overview of his method, sterility is definitely considered and he likes to cover the lid's of his jar's with both a metal lid ( with holes for the needle of course) and then tin foil (aluminum foil).

A few advantages with using whole grains: you pressure cook em so you get better sterility, you only have one innoculation hole so your syringes may last longer, the substrate can be shook so they will colonize a lot faster, you do more substrate at a time, you dont need vermiculite, better air exchange because there is more room in the jars plus the polyurithane.
I think that's it. Maybe someone else can think of more.

It's all cheap. Try several & see what works best for you. Hell, for that matter try rye, wbs, cracked & whole kernal corn togather in a mix. It all works. 6T
