The substrate is whatever your mushrooms grow in or on. Brown rice flour and wild bird seed are examples.

Some mushrooms need or are aided by a non-nutritive covering layer. Vermiculite and peat are examples.

I've tried with and without casing, but have had best experience with a casing.

You can use store bought manure, but some may contain anti-fungals which will deter mushroom growth.

Compost is decomposed or fermented substrate. It's really a generic term for many things.

Try almost any cow manure and you should be fine.

Don't consider yourself retarded. We were all new at one time.

Again, a casing is non-nutritive. Potting soil contains nutrients so it would not be a true casing layer. In could be used as a substrate, but would not be the best choice.

Since this is your first casing, let me suggest using vermiculite. It's easy to work with and maintains moisture well without soaking if used properly.

I know it's difficult to find in some areas. If you have trouble finding it at your local garden center, let me know. I have huge bags of it and will be willing to share it with you. No charge.
