Psilocybe australiana???
    #15978851 - 03/21/12 10:49 PM (12 years, 10 days ago)

Just went for my first walk around today and found a few different varieties... Is this Psilocybe australiana??
Seems to fit the very brief wikipedia text but doesn't quite look the same as the pics. Was growing in a cemetery near my place in woodchips and there seem to be more of these than others.

Sorry about shitty quality pics.

I'm completely new to this and definitely do not want to consume anything that may be harmful...

Help a noob out!

No. It looks like a Gymnopus sp.

Also, Psilocybe australiana is a synonym of Psilocybe subaeruginosa. That wiki page should probably be merged.

Not sure if it should be merged. It states this in the article already.

"Further research by New Zealand mycologist Peter Buchanan has shown Psilocybe australiana to be a variant of Psilocybe subaeruginosa.[1]"

Probably should be merged then.

I sequenced a subaeruginosa last week, it turned out to be really close to P. azurescens.  Closer to that than cyanescens.

Chang & Mills (1992) reduced P. australiana to synonymy with P. subaeruginosa (not as a variant). Johnston & Buchanan (1995) agreed with this position.

I don't think there should be wikipedia articles on outdated names, especially if they're being treated as distinct taxa.

Is this the text you are talking about "Reexamination of Psilocybe subaeruginosa and related species with comparative morphology, isozymes and mating compatibility studies"?

Just sending in a proposal for merger, I should probably list some decent referances with it though.

It's already merged.

But yes that's the Chang & Mills paper I was referring to.
