http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/sundaystartimes/auckland/0,2106,2510087a6497,00.html Golf course over-run with magic mushroom hunters 30 May 2003 A south Auckland golf club has had to beef-up security to control trespassers picking magic mushrooms growing on the course. During autumn ? the mushroom season ? between 20 and 30 people a day have been tramping over the greens at the ******* Golf Club in Manurewa in search of the hallucinogenic fungi. The club's general manager Ross Keown said the problem has been going on for several years. The pine trees on the course provide the perfect growing place for the mushrooms, which are a class A drug. The club is concerned about the safety of the trespassers, who seem unaware of the potentially fatal dangers of being hit by stray golf balls. Mr Keown said there had been some damage to the course, but it was not clear if the mushroom pickers had caused it. There have also been complaints from members about the influx of people wandering around. Last weekend, police were called to remove a car that had been driven on to the course. The people involved were issued with trespass notices. Mr Keown said the mushrooms were hard to control, as fungicides seemed to have little impact on them. Magic mushrooms grow naturally and are prepared by drying or boiling. The mushrooms cause hallucinogenic effects, similar to LSD, which can last for up to six hours. Use can cause a prolonged psychotic state similar to paranoid schizophrenia. Pickers also risk mistakenly taking poisonous mushrooms. Other golf courses in south Auckland said they were not having problems with magic mushroom pickers.

-------------------- One of the reasons marijuana is illegal today because growers in the 30s lobbied against hemp farmers -- they saw it as competition, because It is not chemically addictive as is nicotine, alcohol, or caffeine.

I think it's more that they don't care, not that they are unaware.

They should charge the hunters for a game of golf, let them play through and pick shrooms along the way

Actually, I've heard of people finding actives on certain golf courses. It's not highly unlikely.

Reminds me of Office Space when the Bobs were talking about Milton and how he was still showing up for work but was never told he was fired . They just stopped sending him paychecks and said it would work itself out. I suppose if you poison all the hunters, it will just work itself out. This probably only makes sense if you've seen the movie....
