Nice. Fishing is awesome. Ever go fishing on shrooms? I used to do it until one day I actually caught a big fish while I was peaking. Scared the shit out of me. Now I just don't tie hooks to my line.

I found some subs once out fishing and had a good time. Ate Pan cyans and had peaked bt still tripping hard decided to go fishing.
We took 2 rods each a shovel and a bottle of water. Got there dug worms up baited hooks cast and than we got lost for a while came back to snagged lines and no spare gear.
Its really good story if i could have been botherd to type her up on the phone and i am very stoned atm.

this had me pissing my pants but i know what you mean. I tried wrestling the biggest carp i had ever seen ( i was on shrooms) the first time i had mushies when i found the subs. Also just staring at the swirls and current in the river is very mesmorising along with trees blowing in the distance.

I think I'm going to retire from fishing while shrooming. I love it, but I live in the pacific northwest where there are a lot of threatend and endagered fish. The fish and wildlife agents take this very seriously and love to stop you to make sure you are completely legal. The regulations are very complicated too. This is what concerns me. The last thing I want is to be interrogated by a game warden while I'm shrooming. The rivers around here are absolutely beautiful though, so I think I'm just going to stick with camping and keep the rod and reel locked up. Any type of fishing activity around here is an invitation for a visist from the game wardens.

Im going sturgeon fishing tomorrow catch and release!
goona catch me a dinosaur fish!
I usually catch around 50 rainbow trout a year between me and my lady.
every year we go on a serious fishing trip, trolling boat, lead lines the whole 9 yards, and all that trout gets smoked!
maybe ill post some pics later when i look for and find them...
smoking a j first thing in the morning with the eagles, loons, trees, and mountains on a crystal calm lake is one of lifes greatest joys for me
even without the j...

sturgeon
I'm the haiory one
~5.5ft 70lb

Biggest one of the day.. ~5.5ft 80lb

All catch and release...
These are actually smallish ones, it's not uncommon to catch one over 200 lbs, and they get much bigger than that even.

IMO the regs arent that complicated, you just have to check before you go to a specific place.
a basic freshwater one year license is only like $40...
IMO just dont poach, read the regs, and you wont have any problems. game wardens arent going to bust you for shrooms, and in 25 years of fishing i have only ever encountered a wardeb once and it was nothing...

Never had a fishing license, nor shall i ever need one due to a legal loophole in aust that i can fit.
Having said that, most of my catches are photographed and release unless its a noxious fish such as euro carp and redfin. Only one i will keep is a flathead and a barramundie.
Love flathead a barra fillets!

Fraiser river near mission, B.C.
bottom fishing from a boat with eulichon, salmon roe bags, and eel bait. 80 lb line i believe (not sure) with a ~12-16 oz weight and about 2 foot leader.
you could get away with a smaller, maybe 4 oz weight if you were to shore fish for them.
going out for more trout today
I have found a good secret sweet spot at my local lake that has been producing well.

Went out Saturday evening, FINALLY caught my first fish this season..
Actually first fish I've caught in approximately 13 years. Pretty fun, glad I got back into it.
I could have all the spinners, crank baits and spinner baits in the world but all i needed was a good old fashioned worm.
14". 2 1/2ish pound Rainbow

blue gill are at my favorite spots it's guaranteed if I get bored trying for salmon or steelies that I can throw a worm in on my little trout pole and pull em in one after another, when the little cats in there bite they always swallow the hook though
makes me feel bad because I really have no intention of trying to clean a 6-7" catfish but shit doth happen I suppose, going out tomorrow morning to intercept a massive steelhead run, soooooooooooo excited!!!

Here is another fish, about 170lb. Had every intention on releasin the fish but when we brought it boat-side, we discovered that the fish had been mortally hooked and probably wouldn't survive. Fish was quickly killed and was totally consumed, nothing was wasted. Is always sad when something like that happens (we tag and release every Marlin that we can), but oh well!!

I was curious where all the Shroomery fishermen (and women) hang out. I have gotten back into fishing very hard this year, also have started to fly fish. I have been going out as often as possible and fishing for anything that has fins. I have caught 600+ panfish this year, tons of small bass(no trophies yet) and have started to target trout and steelhead since last week...nothing yet....
Regardless, onto the fishing pictures!

I have thousands of fishing pictures saved...Fishing is right up there with my obsession with mushrooms. Here are a few flies I tried when I first started out this year, I have since gotten a bit better:

Those are some nice catches!! I haven't done too much freshwater fishing here in Australia, thrown a few spinners for Australian Bass and a bit of fly fishing for trout. The lure of catching big gamefish is too great!! hahaha
Looking to combine fly and gamefish and switch a Marlin onto fly in the future - will cost alot of money to get everything I need to do it but it would be a real feather in the cap. Don't want a massive fish, 150lb would be plenty big enough!!

I have read a few chapters in different books about saltwater fly fishing...looks like fun for sure. I know if I had a chance to chase huge game fish I would be all over it in a heart beat.
I have recently been stalking a small tributary of a large river system in my area. It is a cold spring creek, very clear, low for this time of the year but I have seen some massive trout kicking around.
The first time I went I was tossing a foxxee clouser around a large rock formation in a deeper pool and hooked into a 20+ trout...she spit the hook almost instantly (regulations state you can use a single barbless hook). I regrouped, cast to the other side of the pool and hooked into a fish of equal size. I played it for a minute or so before it spit the hook in a splash as it jumped... I was heartbroken to say the least:(. Last few times I have been out that way the trout are very easily spooked, and I have yet to get into anything other then this guy...the first and only trout I have ever landed...although it is just a tease and I feel I have yet to catch a nice trout:

Interesting to see those sorts of regulations placed on tackle over there, whilst netting and other non-rod and reel styles are banned here, the types of hooks used aren't regulated unless fishing in a tournament. And even then, not all tournaments have stringent hook regulations.
If you ever get the chance to go and chase some billfish, take it. You might not catch anything but at the very least you will have an amazing day. Should come to Australia and chase some billfish, during certain times of the year we can see anywhere up to 10 fish tagged every day. Makes your knuckles drag on the ground after all that!! hahaha

The regulations are just for this creek because of its fragile and delicate ecosystem. It is catch and release only, you can only use a single barbless hook, and after October 1st it is fish sanctuary and anyone who fishes the area can be fined.
I may be ending up out in Eastern Canada sometime next year, I am hoping to get on a fishing charter to chase some saltwater game fish.
This thread made me take a few minutes to look through some old photos...here are a few that caught my eye out of thousands:

Oh really? That's gotta suck. We face similar shit here, 70% of all the world's marine parks are found here in Australia for no other reason than the insane eco-terrorists (that's what we call them) are trying to make a complete ban on line fishing. The worst part is the government actually listens. A report was written recently by a former disgraced politician who has ZERO experience in fisheries management with the recommendation of a marine park extension. Rec fisherman fought against it, showing how no research was provdided with the report and with scientific research being provided as to why the marine park would not help the area and what should be done instead. The marine park extension was still granted, locking out an entire region of fisherman.
I am not sure where it is in Canada, but Prince Edward Island has the absolutely incredible run of Giant Bluefin Tuna. Have you seen it? Hooking a 800-1200lb tuna would be absolutely insane, my biggest gamefish was a 600lb Blue Marlin caught on 15kg tackle. If I caught a tuna like that, I could die happy

I don't mind the regulations, it is for the best. Seems a bit different here in Canada, the fisheries are usually run by passionate scientists and outdoorsmen. This creek used to produce massive trout in alarming numbers but after years of people taking more then there limit, fishing out of season, using barbed treble.hooks (increased mortality rates ) and other factors the creek went to Shit. These regs have been in place for 5 years now ans it seems things are just now turning around. I had a long talk with the head guy at the local ministry about the creek and learned a lot.
I forgot to mention also that organic and live bait are not allowed in this creek.
I am a catch and release fisherman mostly. I keep 1-2 fish a year for food, usually when I go up north. I don't judge others who fish for food though.

I'm much the same as well, I fish for the future. Tag and release fishing has become almost customary in gamefishing circles and I am more than happy to watch a big fish swim away healthy. Only one billfish in ten years has come back to shore with us due to getting hooked through the eye (pictured in this thread).
We need your fisheries management here in Australia. Decisions made about the fishery by our government is usually made by the government when their strings get pulled. Fisherman generally don't do it, maybe we should.
We get banned from fisheries around our nation, yet the government recently doubled it's small pelagics quota at the exact same time a 450 foot super trawler applies to fish Australian waters. Disgraceful.

Yep the first on is a male brown trout. You can see hes starting to form his kype (hooked jaw) for defence in spawning in the fall. Got him at 25-30ft on a smaller copper mooselook. Second fish I think is a hen. And that last pick is of a fresh silver sided atlantic salmon.

Its often very hard to tell the differance between a very large brown trout and and an atlantic. Especially after the been in the river a while there colors change from silver to more yellowed almost identical to certain strains of browns. The tells are the tail and mouth.

Now you mention it i can see the body colour diff. head shape and markings from quick glance was a trout but now i see there isnt a longer bottom jaw and markings arnt as vivid as trout. Have caught a few AS in murky, sand/pebble/mud bottom rivers but they were silver and in the dark they almost looked like undersized rainbow trouts The brownie looks like hes going/already in spawning.

Just got back from my day of fishing a major river in my area. It was a long ass drive, about 4 hours total round trip but I had a blast. Hit the river at three different areas, and was easily on the water for 7 hours today. Only hooked into two smaller trout, the first is pictured below, the second flipped off before I could get a picture:

I went to a local fly ship first and talked with the owner and got a lot of good information and tips. I spent most of the day tossing size 18 scuds, 18-22 caddis, and caddis pupae. I hooked into both my trout using the small grey scuds.
The last hour I was on the water the fish were hitting the top hard. I tossed on a few dries and had a bunch of blow ups, but nothing wanted to hook up...not sure if the trout were just splashing at it, or if they were hitting it without taking the hook...not sure as I am new to the world of trout fishing.
Either way it was a good day, and I will be back for his big brother

NIce work! beautiful native brown there. That means your river is clean and don't doubt mommy and daddy are swimming around. Scuds are a productive fly. I like them in weedy runs. When I first started fly fishing with dries I would make the mistake of setting the hook at the first sign of a rise basically pulling the fly outta its mouth. I since then I've learned to make sure to give them the little extra half second to let them take it.

Also from this pic if I might make the suggestion of using a much lighter florocarbon tippet. When i fish (depending on what I'm doing) I'm using like a 5 or 6x (especially if it receives a ton of fishing pressure) . Granted if I hooked a lunker it takes alot more skill to land but TRUST ME 99% of the time you wont ever get a bite from the big guy without the light line. For me its always that game. The big guys won't hit it unless it legit perfect presentation. If you ever see your fly on a drift you'll see it gets alot of refusals before it drifts perfect and looks good enough to fool one. They are prob some of the smartest fish I've ever fished for. Like the big ones are redic. Most them know all the old tricks. Like you know that big guy lives under that rock you throw everything in your box at him for weeks and finally on that one magic cast is perfect and he takes you fly and your heart starts pumping. Too bad the bastard knows if he runs right under that log he'll just break you off but this is why I love fly fishing for trout so much. Also trim that tag end just a bit more trust me they can see that you will double your bites.

Thanks for the tips man, I am new to fly fishing and targeting trout so am just skimming the surface.
The tippet is frogs hair 5X floro, #6, is the lightest I have in my collection at the moment. I just recently made the transition to targeting trout so I have 5X,6X floro, and 12# floro for bassing. It is funny you mention the tag end, I did not notice or think about it until I posted the picture and was admiring the little guy.
I have noticed a very large change in targeting trout...they are mega spooky and not easily fooled that is for sure. I just spent $175 on books about trout and steelhead fishing...should be a fair bit to learn and study. I was talking to the guy at the fly store today and he seems to think the fish I hooked into last week were steelhead...I will be targeting them very soon as well, thinking of going to a Steelhead clinic actually and hopefully learn a thing or two and catch some steels...the last two left my heart pounding before it was crushed lol.
Got off on a rant lol. You seem to know your stuff, was curious how you go about presenting scuds and other small nymph like flies? I tied up some soft shot 12 or so inches above the fly and let it drive through the run trying to keep in contact with it by stripping in line and following the path with my rod tip...its seemed the two trout that did take my offering took it when it had reached downstream of where I was standing...
Love the pics you posted brother...some very beautiful fish man...would love to have a trophy like that to hoist up and get a picture of, great work man.

5x or 5lb test cuz i think 5x is 3lb and 6x is 2lb. Frogs hair is perfect! Frogs hair is by far the most expensive but also the best I swear it has a thinner diameter or something about it for me that brand made a difference.
To catch a steelhead locally would be like almost catching a unicorn unless I went up to the great lakes. BUt steelhead are amazing like salmon. If your holding an adult steelhead that returned to its place of birth to spawn you holding a one in thousands fish to survive. Look at that fish and i ask it "where have you been?" what trails and tribulations as fates hand thrown you. What special traits did you posses that thousand of your bothers and sisters went out to sea but you were one of the few to return. And what a beautiful thing that you have come back to the place of your birth to pass on these special traits to the next generation! Fucking nature man! I think they live a few years in the ocean traveling the cold seams of current chasing bait thousand and thousand of miles crossing oceans. Yet somehow instinct wil lead them back home to the exact place of there birth. All these things and more fill me with a great admiration for these amazing creatures. And holding it in your hand only means your skills out foxed the slickest of foxes. Its very gratifying.
As far as nymphs go again its a game of finding balance. You gotta find a weight heavy enough to get you bouncing off the bottom but too much weight and you'll snag a rock every cast. It sounds like your doing it right. The key tip as you said with nymphs is to keep it real tight and maybe use an indicator. Trout are constantly sucking up sticks and rocks and shit and spitting them out when the find its not food. So often a hit on a nymph will be so light you wont see or feel it especially with a slacked line. They just kind lip them and drop it. Get good at mending to cuz it will help you achieve the perfect drift. don't forget you can get fancy with beadheads and dries with droppers, hopper coppers, fishing multiple nymphs on a rig to cover a ton of water.
Like this:

and all kinds of shit as your knowledge grows. I'd say 80% of my fish come from wet flys or nymphs. Streamers and dries are more fun though by far imo. The reason why alot of fish are caught at the end of the drift (it's like 60% on my nymph hits) is because it replicates a hatching nymph. As you near the end of the drift the slack comes outta your line and begins to pull the fly to the surface just like as if it was swimming up to hatch. This almost always triggers instinctual strike as it thinks the food is about to escape. ALWAYS finish your nymph drifts all the way up to the surface. Don't be surprised when one fucking slams the thing like a torpedo right before it hits the surface film (almost rip the rod outta you hand if it takes you by surprise lol)

That is some gnarly shit with the steelhead man...never really thought about it like that but when I hold up my first steel head I bet it will be a magical moment.
I know that 6X can be 2-3lb depending upon the manufacturer, but what I have says Frogs Hair floro, 5X, then besides that is #6...I think it is made for fly fishing for bass, perhaps that would explain the fact that the lb rating does not match the industry standard, I think the X rating just refers to the diameter...
I plan on taking some lessons in the near future so I can learn to properly mend. I can put the flies out there at this point, and my roll cast is getting better, but I guarantee I am already developing bad habits as I am learning from a few youtube videos.
I have read a fair bit about dropper rigs and things of that nature, but most of the fisheries here for trout and steelhead only allow use of a single barbless hook. The second I am on waters that allow it I will be giving it a shot though. Lots of books talk about it in detail.
That makes sense with the nymphing...thanks for the input and advice brother...I really do appreciate it
I think I am going to make a fly fishing thread tomorrow so I do not hog the catches thread with all of our banter lol.

This is a brook trout btw beautiful fish in the fall when the get their spawning colors and as ferocious as piranha too.
---edit--- On second thought based on the dorsal and tail fin that might be a dolly varden or char I really cant tell...depending on where it was caught I vote arctic char

I have been tying for three months now and in that short time have aquired enough material to tie thousands upon thousands of flies. I will start a thread later with some photos of my tying desk.

12-14" Brown caught on a size 16 griffiths gnat:

Caught on a size 16 scud nymphed through a foam line:

These fish below I caught using a size 16 freshwater shrimp (scud) fly I showed above. It was deadly for the little guys today, I stopped taking pictures after the first few but hooked into 7-8 within 10 minutes:

That's a stunning Brown you got, always love their colours.
Just to keep the pics rolling, fished on a mate's boat last year and we got this 519lb Blue Marlin on 50lb gear for the skipper's younger brother. The fight lasted all of 45 minutes as the fish got tail-wrapped pretty much immediately during it's inital line burning, 600 yard run. I had warned the guys of their lure-rigging tehcnique and it's potential to do that as we were setting our spread and they shrugged it off. Then they said I jinxed us when the fish got tail-wrapped and it came up dead. I might be slightly supersticious, but I don't believe in that being the only reason it happened.
Either way, she was a stunning creature. Just too bad she came up stiff as a board otherwise we would've put a tag in her and let her go free to fight another fisherman, another day
