Hardwire a cord to a 240v stove element...?
    #15976619 - 03/21/12 02:07 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Im trying to hook up a cord to a stove broiling element...
Its a 2 prong element...

Do i just not use a ground and use a hot wire on each end of the element?

Yes, but be sure to include a fuse into the circuit, and don't do anything stupid with that heater element. It's going to dissipate a lot of energy and therefore constitute a huge fire hazard.

You can use the ground wire for a metal case/chassis in which your project will be enclosed, or you can leave it disconnected if there is no metal chassis.

Be careful with that project there; I'm not sure what you're trying to do, but the combination of components and (lack of) experience is a combustible one.

Ah right. Well, make sure the heating element doesn't overheat. Since you'll be using sheets (which I assume you will cut into smaller bits?), there will be a lot of air surrounding the heating element. It probably won't be able to dissipate all that energy, resulting in the element reaching temperatures that will burn your polycarbonate and possibly the heating element itself. It's something you may want to put some thought into. In any case, make sure you include a heavy-duty switch in the circuit so you can quickly break the circuit if things start to go wrong.

You'll likely burn the element the first time you leave it on for awhile unless you add a thermostat.

The burner will not be on for longer than 5-10 mins at a time...
Just long enough to bring our plastic up to temp and make it sag...
Ive seen this done on youtube, just curious if my wiring guess was correct...

luvdemshrooms has a point though. I'd be very wary of the element overheating and burning your product. You could start a nasty fire this way.
