Hiking the AT this summer!

My girl and I will be moving up to NC this summer, so we're gonna do some great hiking!
I know the trail doesn't start there, and initially our original goal was to hike the whole thing... but the schedule isn't working out that way. So we're gonna say fuck it and just hike what we can/want.
Anybody else ever hike the AT?

I haven't hiked the whole AT but I have hiked much of the Georgia portion. Did 30 miles on it one day from Springer to Neel's Gap. I live close to Springer too. Very beautiful!

So are you planning on hiking the whole thing or just a portion of it?

I'm sure I'll hike the whole thing eventually. But for now, just a portion.

I recommend the Georgia portion then. It's 76 miles long with plenty of great climbs and views. Great introduction to Appalachian trail hiking.

I do trail crew each year. I spend two weeks repairing the trail. By the time it's over, it makes me really hate hikers. When the trail isn't in good shape, hikers make their own path around the bad spot, and then our group has to fix the original trail as well as make the alternative trail the hikers created unattractive by half-burying sharp pointy rocks and throwing dead logs in the way. http://i.imgur.com/dEmuT.jpg If you're hiking through Virginia on May 9th - 21st, you might see me.

the stretch of trail nearest to Asheville, NC is beautiful. Max Patch is one spot in particular i frequent often. Beautiful grassy balds with 360 degree views. there are some nice camping spots in that area as well.
actually, last time i was up there i met a through hiker. the guy had started in GA and was hoping to complete the whole trail in one go. seemed like a super nice guy. he even expressed his appreciation to me for stopping to talk with him. the trail can get pretty damn lonesome at times.
good luck and happy trails wherever you wonder. may the trail magic help you on your way

"We are all intoxicated. We were born into an insane asylum, a world crazy-making. We believe what we see and hear. The real myth is the myth of sanity, of rationality: it's a disease that is eating away at the earth. All the poisons flow from our denial. We deny madness, we forget our crimes, we dismember the corpse, we imprison our children. We need poison to poison the poison, to remember the sacred nature of intoxication, the green body of the young god." ~ Dale Pendell

I'm a 2011 SOBO thru hiker. There are a lot of beautiful spots on the AT in the south. Max Patch was already mentioned. Georgia would be a good section to start with. It's relatively easy with some good views. You'll have a good chance of seeing a bear around Iron Mtn, TN/NC. I saw 11 in a 10 mile stretch in that area. Virginia Highlands in southern VA was hellasick. GSMNP is hellapretty but it's packed with tourists in many areas and even the backcountry areas were crowded when I went thru.

You could thru hike the Benton Mackaye Trail. It goes something like 300 miles through the mountains. It passes (or maybe terminates) right near the AT's southern terminus.
