if you were soaking a couple hundred lbs of grains 5% would seem like alot, but its still only 5%,ive read of plp using 10%

I've read RR said it can increase yields by up to 25%!

5% is for bulk substrates; gypsum is beneficial at both stages. I add about a tablespoon of gypsum per quart of grain and I add it to the simmer not the soak. I soak, rinse, then simmer so if I added it to the soak all the gypsum would be rinsed off. Gypsum just sort of coats the grains.

Also: you should add the water to the grains and then add your gypsum as gypsum is not very soluble and will form a gunk in the bottom of the pot.

No hard and fast rule, just don't toss in a pound of it. I usually soak my grain in a huge aluminum kettle - usually enough for ~12 jars or so - and add in 1 and 1/2 heaping tablespoons of gypsum and a few tablespoons of instant coffee.

I've use up to a cup in a gallon soak and simmer. I like to mix it in a big measuring cup first because a lot of it turns all muddy, so I just pour off the water a couple times then throw out the mud....so I guess I dont really use a cup of gypsum.....:facepalm3:

According to RR's rye grain prep, it's 1 tablespoon per 3 cups of rye.
Put in your pot w/ hot water.
Stir to mix it all up then add your clean/rinsed grains.
Soak for 4-24 hours.
