100% colonization?

These rye grain jars were innoculated 30 days ago with Cambodian spores.
They all appear 100% colonized:
But, then they are shaken, and they look like this:
What's going on? Aren't they supposed to be 100% white all the way through?
They are being incubated at ~80 degrees F.

it seems more like the colonization is only occuring on the surface of the grains...so when the jar is shaken, the mycelium is pulled from the surface and the grains are exposed... I thought the mycelium is supposed to penetrate the surface of each grain and completely colonize them. ??

Z is right, don't dunk the grains. those pics are a little dark so it's hard to really tell. if in doubt let them sit for another week. and as said above, if the jars smell like the funk they may have contams.

That jar is ready to go, that is what happens when you shake grain. It will continue to do that as long as you shake it. I suggest using it to spawn more rye unless you already have more jars, then use it to spawn some straw/poo or just case it.

are you serious smokey? If it gets crumbled to be cased, there will be lots of rye surface exposed..aren't those points for contams to take hold? because otherwise the next step is to spawn some poo

Wait for full colonization before birthing. All other pics of completed grain jars I've seen are completely white just like pf jars. That exposed grain surface is prime territory for contams, just like if you birth a pf cake that has an area of exposed rice still, definetely not a good idea. edit: I even looked at the first pic with a little confusion at first, it looks all light and webby. Then the second pic confirmed. Wait for that dense rhizo.

yea it is a long time for colonization, doesn't mean you should birth early though.

well, look at this guy's post.
His jars look pretty much like the pics I provided. He then spawned to straw. Hmm! seems like this 100% colonization thing isn't to definite.

stamets has before and after pics of colonized rye after shaking-its exactly what you are showing, and if you are not satisfied i can post the pics for you, but you should be good to go with that jar. Jake H

Looks like a possible contamination of Bacillus. Do they smell like rotten eggs/ crotch? Ive had this problem many times before with PF cakes. To kill bacillus, you have let the jars sit for 48 hours before sterilizing/steaming. Their endospores are resistant to heat, so you have to let them sit for 2 days and let them germinate before sterilizing. If they dont have a foul odor, you might want to tip them upside down and let oxygen enter and co2 exit. Thats all i got. Mc
