Phase 2 for long composting *help*
    #1595300 - 05/30/03 11:23 PM (21 years, 18 days ago)

So, Jim started about 20-30 gallons of compost around a month ago ....
It was a nightmare for Jim to hunt down cottonseed meal and urea in the city ... in the end, he found an awesome nursery though ....

The ammonia smell came and went, and the straw turned into a dark brown mass with the whitish Actinimycetes ... it smells kind of good.

So, The Man recommends pasterizaztion at 135 F for four hours ... how can Jim accomplish this without having to get the styrofoam cooler and warm mist humidifier? Also, what is the deal with boosting straw nutes with cottonseed/rapeseed meal? Jim has pounds of it and wants an excuse to procure more. Thanks.

Jim, you may have to break out the Bob Harris composter for that.

There is a vague reference in one of Stamet's books about small insulated bins being used for phase two. Adjustable vents in the top and bottom control air flow via convection and therefore temps. You could give it a shot, but I'm really not sure if you've got enough volume to generate the heat needed. I'm thinking maybe a screen used to keep it off the bottom of a trash can, adjustable vents in the bottom and the tight fitting lid? Wrap the whole thing in some type of insulation? I really don't know, it may work just fine with no insulation if it's inside, I've never done it.

BTW, some dude wanted a big steam past. but couldn't get enough heat out of warm mists, so he modified a much large container and used a wallpaper-steamer to heat it up, something you may need to do. Not sure if a warm mist could really keep 30 gallons heated up.....

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

You can use your PC as a steam generator, by removing the weight, and connecting a hose to the nipple in the lid of the PC. Route the hose into whatever you want to steam.

Thanks ....
Jim is planning to try oven temperatures for the pasteurization. His gas oven runs a little low (as he learned during unsuccessful pasteurization attempts with coir/verm). With a digital thermometer, he is hoping to keep it in that range. Will let all know how pasteurization/spawning turns out ....

Jim, you can check your oven's lowest temperature with a meat thermometer in a jar of water. Mine stays warm right at 130. If you're not going to use your compost immediately after Phase II finishes, consider freezing it after you take it out of the oven...

Jim, also you may want to phase II for more than 4 hours. I do it for 48 hours in the oven, and the actinomycetes really take over.

ive mentioned my machine before but no one pays attention. i think this may work for you. ive obtained a beer keg and cut the top out. ive also gutted a dishwashing machine. i took the heating elements from the dish washer and installed them in the bottom on the keg. the frame and box of the washer are mounted on top of the keg and the holes sealed.
i do not use a thermostat because boiling water only gets so hot. i put dry substrate loosly packed in milk crates in the washer and turn it on. two days later i unplug it and let it cool for a day before opening it. the final product works great. its a bit of work to obtain the proper parts and get them fit together but much less work in the long run....
also not sure where you are but www.craigslist.com in the free section has everything you need.
