First time bucket grow
    #15760717 - 02/04/12 03:11 PM (12 years, 21 days ago)

So i work at a large restaurant and we have an abundance of 4 gallon, squared mayonnaise buckets. I have been using filter patch bags with success but think in order to optimize my space in my fruiting chamber, buckets are the way to go. I can stack 5 of these buckets, with lids, high to a level of one inch below my roof which is perfect. They are about 10"x10" on top and taper down to 9"x9" on the bottom and are about 15" tall. I have 20 of them saved so far which is about perfect for my FC. Giving me 4 stacks of 5 with room to walk around all sides of the stacks. So i have searched about every post and thread of the subject, seen some great pictures of successful grows, and now have just a few questions before i get started.
1. What size holes to drill(3/5,1/2,3/4?)
2. How many holes( more= more small fruits, less=fewer larger fruits?)
3. White or black trash bags to line the inside of the buckets?
4. Is a dark corner of my basement ok for colonization?
5. Best way to check if they are fully colonized(peek in the bag,Holes?)
6. Drain holes in the bottom of the buckets?
7. Roughly how much straw can you cram into a normal 5 gallon bucket?
Im sure more questions will come to me just anxious to get this started and all help is much appreciated.
Thanks
Chefin

3.  Doesn't matter - also, you don't really need a bag at all, think laundry basket teks.  If you are wanting to ne more contam proof then slide the filled holy bucket inside another bucket with no holes.

4.  Yep fine, just make sure there's a slight draught so CO2 doesn't build up.

5.  Peeking is fine

6.  You shouldn't need drain holes, you've made substrate bags before and you know standing water wasn't good in those either.

7.  Run straw through a mulching blower/vac and pack in as much as you can.

Ya was more thinking about moisture retention for hole size and inner bagging. My FC stays at 93% RH so I guess they won't dry out to much. But to not have to use 40 buckets to grow 20 I think bags might be more efficient but wasteful. But they can be recycled I guess. Anyone find the ideal hole size and quantity yet?

I use a bag with a few 1" slits(gas exchange) placed over my bucket and can peek in, when the holes are fully covered with myc I open the top and peek, if it is good so are you.  I use 3/4" holes but I think 1/2 might be just as good.  Drain your sub well and drain holes are not needed, they won't hurt either.  I place my buckets out in the rain with the lid off after I am done with them indoors.  A drain hole is nice. I find that holes on one side is easier for me to deal with than holes all around.  I would err on the side of too few than too many.  I am not good a measuring straw.  I just make up a bunch and make as many buckets as I can.  If I have a little left over I make a bag.  I always have extra oyster spawn if I need it.

Sorry I am not as organized as NSF but I'm not.

So im going to do one test bucket today. From everything i have read and all the feedback i have been given i think im going to go with 1/2" holes on 3 sides of the buckets with about 5 holes on each side.I am going to use black trash bags to line the buckets with small holes cut in after inoculation. Mainly to help with clean up. Though i do have the use of our commercial dish washer at work also. I have 6 qts of king oyster spawn ready and a 4 qt bag of grey oyster nearly finished. In about a week i will have 10 qts of yellow oyster spawn ready. I was wondering when doing a mixed grow how to stack the buckets according to light needs and CO2 tolerance. I believe it would be best to do kings on bottom, then greys, then yellows on top closest to light. How does this sound?

Sounds good.  I do not know about the stack order but should work.  Good luck!

So here is what the buckets look like and a shot of one of the big kettles i have at work for pasteurizing. I did three buckets, all with about 14 lbs of cooked substrate in them. Lined them with black plastic trash bags. Used 5/8" holes in a diamond pattern on 3 of the 4 sides. Two buckets i used 1 qt of rye spawn. Its king oyster. And one i used 1/2 qt of spawn. I also did one of my filter bags with almost the same weight, 11.5 lbs, of substrate just to compare.

So ill keep on updating as things progress. Im also going to do a batch of grey oysters in about 3-4 days with another 3-4 buckets.

well to be honest the last batch i did i had issues with the substrate that was in contact with the filter patch not colonizing. It literally left a patch shaped bald spot directly behind the filter and eventually contaminated in the FC a bit. But i also think i had moisture issues and really just wanted to repeat the packing to see if it was just a fluke or if you really shouldn't have the sub packed this high. I started another post on the subject but never got any good feed back on it so just doing an experiment.

Starting up Oysters myself and want to avoid bag growing altogether.  Im thinking of either bucket growing or laundry basket type tek.  Thanks for sharing your idea and I will be watching for your results.  Looks like having restaurant access helps with your bulk pasteurization! Good Luck!

Ya the thing i like about the buckets is that you dont need another container to keep up humidity while colonizing unlike the basket tek. Plus i can stack them for added space optimization.

So here is an update on the bucket grow. Not much to show of the buckets because there still colonizing, but here are some pictures of the bag i packed the same day with about the same amount of sub. Its about 11.5# where the buckets are about 14#. The bag is a filter patch and upon more learning realized i was filling them to much and just shouldn't be using them for straw all together. So i put tape over the patch, and cut identical holes as i have on the bucket to simulate the bucket as much as i could. The bag is about 50-60% done after 11 days. It has a relatively low spawn rate, only 1/2 qt for that much straw, so no surprise how its progressing.

So it has been a slow go but finally some pins!!! I put the bucket into the fruiting room about a week ago. It seemed fully colonized best i could tell by the top and holes. So i cut the trash bag back and scratched the surface. Folded the bag loosely back over it, and now i have pins coming out the holes on the side. Hoping for some top pinning soon.
Here are some pin pick and the top view.
