Moderation in moderation. (not personal)
    #1592820 - 05/30/03 11:29 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Ok, let's keep this focused on Moderator actions in general, and not personalize it, or focus on individuals...

We want to hear your input regarding the overall concepts of Moderator edits, deletes, lockings, and making rules for their forums. We're not so much interested in any personal beefs...

That is all...

Thanks for your consideration!

PS: The whole debate seems, to me, to be about where we all draw the line, not whether or not we draw it all.

-------------------------------------------------------

Why was the other thread closed because of two individuals?....i would like to continure the conversation without it being personal.

My opinion regarding the overall concepts of moderation here is gererally positive. We need the moderation on a site as large as this. Your right when you say the issue is more about "where we all draw the line, not whether or not we draw it all."

I agree with most of the rules, but most of what i see is a mod mistaking a situation as hostile or bullying when really there is nothing of the sort. This premature intervention creates ill will, especially if teh person being edited starts another thread complaing or upset, and ends up being banned. Personnaly i dont think saying things like " dude, your an idiot, but theres no way that can work because...". constitutes a personall attack but the issue is very much where we draw the line.....and i think its drawn too soon in some cases which i will not list so as to keep this topic impartial.

Ok, we'll keep the debate on, but as stated above, let's keep it clean!

And let's talk about the general issues and not specific personalities....

Who else shares a similar veiw that in many cases the line is drawn prematurely?

I've stated i do, but that is because simple name calling or descriptive language, to me, does not seem negative. If one person says something and another takes offense, see if they work it out, or mabye have a three response limit, so that it doesn't end up depreciating the thread. Its hard to tell if people are being sarcastic sometimes, or if they're just kidding around, all these factors contribute to the difficulty a mod has of deciding when enough is enough.

That's very true about the factors contributing to the difficulty of a mod making his/her decision. Sometimes I think the line is drawn prematurely, as well.

I think maybe the mods do need to back off a little bit in some cases, and see if the situation works itself out on its own. Usually two people having a little beef will not make the thread get out of hand, and they will most likely end their dispute shortly if the thread is not locked prematurely.

I don't think posts should be deleted by mods simply because their is a personal comment towards them, either. Deleting the post usually benefits the person whose post was deleted, anyway, since whatever unnecessary words they said will not be viewable by others. But still, I think a post should only be deleted when it contains some sort of dangerous misinformation.

Anyway... Those are just my thoughts.

Smileys help! However, their use also undercuts the sarcasm, so some people refuse to use them, because they wish to be dry and sarcastic. It's awfully complicated...

I don't see how name calling can benefit a discussion. There is no need for it. I think it is used by those who have weak argumentative skills. It draws attention away from the argument and can create hostilities which do not foster good dialogue.

I can see if two friends are used to name calling in the course of their argument that they are comfortable with it. However, this is a forum of many individuals, and as a whole I don't think that individuals respond well to seeing name calling or being part of name calling.

On a nother note.

I do believe we as users have the right to understand and question the actions of the mods and Administration of this board. This is an interactive site and interaction plays a critical role in its operation.

I also believe it is the responsibility of the Mods and Admin to explain such actions as best as possible.

I don't see how name-calling can benefit a discussion either, but locking the thread has worse consequences if you ask me!

EDIT:  Perhaps instead of locking the thread when two people start flinging mud around, the moderator should send a polite PM to the problem people asking them to please stop of face a temporary ban.

good idea, PM's to offending parties would ensure a thread can continue uninterrupted. A thread derailed by personal attacks isn't much use to anyone, but neither is a locked one!

Well actually, I was planning on reopening the thread for discussion once we'd reached a decision on the matter.. but hell, this one will do. Anyways, a new issue of the Administrative Rules & Guidelines will be released in the very near future (maybe even tonight)... so keep an eye out. It should address most concerns brought forth.

I think the moderators and admins on this board, past
present and (likely) future all dominate.

they do an exceptional job considering the work environment
and lack of compensation.

may the g-p-m-3-m reign be a fruitful one!

Thanks for addressing this

I don't know where specific "lines" should be drawn, and I understand the difficulty in trying to moderate such a large community accessible by any weirdo with a computer

I don't know what else to say about this right now.. I guess moderator "discretion" is under fire here.

I completed the revisions and the administration is in full agreement on the current draft. It is now in the mod forum awaiting acknowledgement and any thoughts on potentially ambiguous language or suggested modifications from the staff of The Shroomery.

I have also sent PMs to all moderators to expedite this process. It should be published here no later than Wednesday night.
