    #15929684 - 03/10/12 02:44 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

which is better? my pressure cooker can hold :

16 plastic pint jars or 19 glass pint jars
5 plastic quart jars vs 7 glass quart jars

if you have more pros or cons please list below so the community can come to an informed decision.

Quote:

Glass

pros
can use more in pressure cooker
lids can be bought separately for easy replacement.
better seal
eco Friendly

cons
will break if dropped (can hurt you)
metal tops will rust

Quote:

Plastic

pros
will not break

cons
takes up more room in pressure cooker
non screw lids can come off while shaking.
Made of oil

Which is better?
You may choose only one

Glass pro: made out of sand, instead of valuable non-renewable oil.

Glass is less expensive. Enjoy finding great plastic that will last you half as long for under ninety cents apiece...

Glass.

Cheaper,  easier to re use, more durable (for me), better seal.

I've used both. Prefer glass.

OP, do you not think that being made of SAND instead of OIL is a huge PRO for glass? You've added the others.

Glass all the way. Besides, rust won't hurt anything. When rust gets to the point where you feel it might compromise your grow, buy new lids and rings as stated above.

I'm a little worried about pressure cooking plastic. Heating causes plastics to release harmful endocrine disruptors such as bisphenol A.
I just want mushrooms, not a side order of poison. :badshroom:  just a thought. The documentary Plastic Planet  might help you decide which is better.

Plastic is cheaper. I just picked up 50 pint sized Fabri-Kal plastic containers with lid for $22 including shipping. And they held up in the pc

5-6 more dollars an you could have had 48 glass jars that will practically last forever.

heat tends to warp plastic not to mention you can and likely will strip a few lids by over tightening rendering them basicly useless.

honestly I have only used ball and kerr glass jars broke maybe 4 or 5 when I was learning how to properly use a pc

Glass all the way. To me its the same difference as picking between a glass and plastic bong. Its all about durability and quality of the seal.
