Good Casing Trays (where to find)?
    #1592650 - 05/30/03 10:14 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Sup y'all.

I'm having a hard time finding suitable casing trays.

I'd like to find some that are around 3-4" deep, and maybe a few 6" ones for poo.

Problem is, the only decent sized ones I could find, are baking pans from tin foil wihch disintegrate after a casing or two. I'd really like to have some plastic ones, but everything I see is clear.

I've checked all the manufacturer's sites, such as sterilite, rubbermaid, tupperware, etc, as well as ebay.

These are for beginner casings, such as using a quart jar of WBS, or 2 half pints of BRF. So I'd like to be able to fit a few in my fruiting chamber, say 3-4.

I've checked the local second hand stores, etc...all to no avail. I was wondering if you guys had some links to post, so I could order these and be well on my way.

Thanks!

Those don't last.

I don't want something disposable, I want something decent, sort of like a real small kitty liter tray.

Money doesn't bother me, I just can NOT find these things anywhere. The only thing I've found are army surplus ammo crates (think SKS ammunition in bulk), but I don't want to really use metal.

I'm in the same situation. I've heard of glass baking trays that work very well, but I guess they are hard to find--I haven't had any luck.

Just get the clear plastic and cover the outside with electrical tape to block light.

The various "dollar" stores can be great places. Dude picked up small tubs for washing dishes at $1 a piece! He also uses the Al Lasagna pans like someone else said. These are like 5 or 6 for $1.

Yea small 3 gallon rubbermaids nwork great. I use 31 liter sterilite containers. This is mainly for bulk but the 3 gallon are decently small.

A clear rubbermaid shoebox size with construction paper taped or ti foil taped to keep out light works.  Rubbermaid makes opaque colored shobox size ones too at target or walmart or kmart or smart & final.  Also, Kitty litter boxes work great, as do just about any non-clear plastic tray.  Go to any of the large chain type 'Mart' stores and you will find.  Good Luck

AHHH!

Thanks for the $1 store tip. I'll get over there tonight.

I didn't see anyhting other than transparent containers at the "marts". And I don't want to use those.

I don't want to get ghetto and tape my whole casing trays either. Nor spray paint.

I just was mainly looking for a link online to something decent. IE: Not transparent.

I have my bulk containers (6+ inches deep), but I'm not ready to use those just yet. They were local recycling bins that I cut a few inches off of the top via a Rotozip tool. They should work PERFECTLY once I get some landscaping fabric.

Any automotive store has sturdy black plastic pans for draining oil in.

Any resturant supply place has strudy black  bus boy trays.

DollarMart/KMart has 10 to 12 quart strudy plastic dish pans.

Kitty litter trays work great.

Mortor mix tubs are great for larger substrates.

Hell.........garden pots work...

The list is endless, if you look around a bit.

Ya, I have a nice oil drain pan going now, but I wanted to find something a little bit smaller, as to not having to lose as much if somehting goes wrong.

I was looking for something around oh...

8wx12lx4d in inches of course.

Maybe I'm not looking close enough or far enough. Dollar store never crossed my mind though.

Metal bread loaf baking pans with a plastic liner sounds about the size you want.

Ok I have the one tray that you just cant beat. If you live by a fish market you are as good as gold. They throw away fish trays that are perfect for casings every day. They are 16 long by 11 wide by 6 deep. They also have lids
that snap shut. I like using polly filters with them also.

The plastic shoebox sized rubbermade or sterlite containers work good and will last. Afoaf puts black tape around the bottom to avoid pins underneath. Also, no need for saran wrap cause the snap on lids hold moisture in just fine.

This works great for bulk teks.

Go to your local harware store. Find the concrete section and buy the concrete mixing bins. They are made of a sturdy black plastic and range in size from 2x3 ft to upwards of 3 x 5 ft. Each is about a foot tall.

A piece of plexiglass attached with hinges makes a nice terrarium.

They also have a nice slope along the edges that makes watering casings (if needed) easier.

if your poor, you can build your own from cd trays. it's pretty ghetto, but it works. Just remember to line it with foil, and use Packing Tape to hold it togheter

but most any 'mart' will sell clear trays. usualy refered to as 'shoebox' something or other. They even come with a lid. I knew this guy who picked up a 5 pack at wal-fart for like $4. Pic n Save (big lots) always stocks storage tubs, and the Sterlite are usualy cheaper than rubbermaid.

Thanks!

I had thought about these the other day, but apparently they left my mind while roaming at the store.

Any specific type of plastic liner?  Why do you need one versus the tin baking pans not needing them?

For you other guys, I'm well aware of what's out there, I don't want to buy a transparent container.  Wet tape is a mess, ghetto, and probably loves to harbor contams.  No thanks.
