BRF Tek - First go, need some advice

Right...
Done my reading and re-reading. Figured I would go for the BRF Tek first time round. I have a PC, but still thought it best to "learn the basics"
Iv followed RR videos to the T, got 1 part BRF, 2 Parts Verm, 1 Part Water.
Problem is i have just got my jar out of the PC and im not sure they look right. The verm looks to have congealed into a paste like substance.
The other thing is, there appears to be water condensation on the side of the dry verm layer. (i dried edges with a paper towel prior to PC, as described in RR vid)
Could really do with some advice guys?
PS: from england so have opted for some jam jars, that i have read from a trusted UK poster are good to go.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it looks like water got into your jars while in the PC. Did you cover the tops with aluminum foil before putting them in the PC? That keeps condensation and/or burbling water from entering the jars.
Also...this may not be a problem at all, but your top verm layer looks very chunky. I'm not sure how well big chunks like that would filter bacteria from outside air. I'm very new to all this so that may not be an issue later on at all, but just thought I'd mention it. I'm sure someone more experienced and knowledgeable will chime in soon.

Dang, well that sucks. Yeah from what I've read if water gets in then that substrate is no longer usable due to the moisture content going up too high and the substrate not being airy enough.
Edit: Just noticed that this thread was your first post and my reply was my first post! Neato

HAHA, What are the odds!
Gonna re-do them. I think i used a too coarse grade of Verm, but luckily i bought a fine and a coarse grade just in case.
Gonna re-do now so they are hopefully ready for the morning.

definitely start over...I would cover the inoculation holes with tape and make sure you spend some time getting the foil on there tight around the lip

Hm, ya know that gets me wondering...I used fine verm, and when I took the foil off of them to inoculate, there were a few little droplets of water on the lids. This told me that at least some amount of moisture got inside, although the substrate looked perfect so I assumed they were fine. (which I now know they are) But what I'm saying is, I guess water will get in either way even with foil on the tops, but the fine verm keeps too much from coming in, whereas course verm will allow more to seep in? But the top verm is supposed to stay dry, so that doesn't seem right! I guess we should have put tape over the holes...? I dunno, like I said I'm still new, but to me it just seems that if you put tape over the holes, that'll keep water out but then how would the steam get in to sterilize the substrate? Or is the steam not required to get in - just to heat the jars to a certain temp? Anyone knowledgeable have more to say on this subject? I'd like to fully understand the intended process.
I wish you the best monkeyman, will you give me an update when you're done? I'd like to know your results, and whether you used tape or not.
Edit: Ah ok, just saw DurbanPoison's post...so tape = good. I'd read somewhere that it's better to not use tape...but perhaps that's only if you put the foil on really tight. Guess I failed there. :P I suppose I'm lucky that my jars are doing as good as they are!

I used tape !
The tapes doesn't stop water, it stop other contaminates getting in. Once the tape is wet it doesn't stop the contams, hence why it needs to stay dry.
Just my two cents, maybe someone who knows something bout something can give some incite?
Second batch is looking MUCH better already - FINE VERM !!

use medical tape or masking tape...when you sterilize, steam is not going into the jar to do this, it just brings it up to the right temperature...water will condensate on back of foil and run in holes with no tape...you can inoculate right through the tape or take it off, just dont recover the holes with tape
