Ouroboros: Caffeine + Nicotine + Alcohol

Experiences that entrain your mind into habitual patterns of living, and which preserve a mode of production and consumption, will be preserved and allowed. Those experiences that may lead to change, doubt, or independence, are culturally prohibited and morally distrusted.

For western culture you're spot on.  Every culture in the world normally has 1-3 substances that are socially acceptable and all the rest are taboo.  For instance in Hindu and Muslim cultures alcohol is swapped with cannabis (at least traditionally).

They're still quite taboo, save for special allowances. While in India I never encountered public use of hashish or opium, except during the religious holidays, and there was the ritualized use (Charas) of the Sadhus who wander around. The younger generation may get high, but it's somewhat counter-cultural there too. It's not at the dinner table.

Alcohol is also available to most Muslims, it's just not as popular. Personally, I believe this is because they typically organize themselves socially according to a rigid community system. Alcohol challenges these barriers and the dis-inhibition is what promotes the mingling desire we utilize at bars and parties. Such behavior is frowned on in Muslim communities. Also, it would be predominantly a cock fest. Women won't be involved unless she's a "whore."

I was thinking about why C/N/A are allowed in the West and seen as lacking intrusiveness. I was on the toilet while pondering this and suddenly the light went off. I had to get up awkwardly and walk to turn it back on (in Israel, our of sheer habit, the light switch is on the outside of the bathroom). Suddenly, about a minute later, the light went off again. I started laughing because of the absurdity and the novelty, but I realized consistency (in terms of our habitual behavior) creates a semi-brain dead state of comfort. We're evolutionarily programmed to be anxious and fearful creatures, craving stability. Substances which help regulate these infantile imprints are seen as necessary or allowable.

There are a host of other complex reasons about substance use obviously, but this recently came to mind.

Yeah, you're right about that. It's funny when people start to judge 'druggies' whilst they've got an alcoholic beverage and cigarette in hand too.

Europeans and others had alcohol, natives from the Americas had mescaline, DMT and salvia etc, South Asians and Arabs had cannabis and caffeine, North East Africans and some Arabs had khat. I could go on. It was quite hypocritical for colonisers to come along to certain countries and outlaw the use of things such as peyote whilst bringing alcohol for their own religious and non religious reasons.

By the way, if you're looking for an awesome books on ethnobotany etc then check out 'Garden of Eden' by Snu Voogelbreinder. He only made a limited number of copies originally (500) but I think he was going to print more if it was popular enough. I would not be surprised if there were none left.

Thanks for the recommendation. Personally, the dynamic creature of the internet seems to be the best living reference for psychoactives. Plus there is potential for corroboration. Print will gradually become a dinosaur, but in the meantime this is the ethno bible, by all accounts.

Thanks for the book name. I really wish I had been able to go to Entheogenesis Australia last year. The lineup was awesome. Trout was there and the creators of Erowid. Maybe I will get the chance to go next year.

I heard good stuff. I've met the Erowid crew. They're just regular folk, and lean more towards social activism now than drug use per se.

Speaking of Aussies:

"Founded in Australia in 2004, the Undergrowth collective is an evolving global organism of writers, artists, media makers and cutting edge ontological guerillas. For more information visit the publisher's website: www.undergrowth.org"

Also, I found this interesting:
