The mycelium in in my puerto rican jars is really thick and ropey. its much different than the treasure coast jars... Is this normal?

I think what you are decribing is rizomorphic growth. This is what you need to strive to reproduce. It speeds up growth, increases the number of pins, and makes bigger mushrooms!

PR naturally is very Rhizomiphoric. This generally means better fruitiing and faster colonisation times. However this doesn`t necessarily mean more fruit or bigger fruit. It just means your mycelium is more aggressive and colonises faster.

hell yea. I noticed this very 'thick ropey' like mycelium build up in one of my jars. good to know its a good thing. it started after i added a heater near the area the jars are.

How cold is it where there are? unless its below 60 you really don't need a heater.

close.. its about 65* F down here. just noticed quicker and more aggressive 'rhizomorphic' growth when i added the heater. pry about 75* in there now..

Lots of bad info in this thread and particularly in this post. PR is not naturally rhizomorphic. First off PR is just a label. PR is a cube and cubes sometimes develop rhizomorphic patterns. That said, I think that rhizomorphic growth is way overrated on these boards. Paul Stamet's statements about the rhizomorphic mycelium being usually stronger, more aggressive and having a higher fruiting potential than a non-rhizomorphic one, are probably the reason why so many people think that "rhizo is better". But there is a lot of discussion about it. RR has pointed out many times that when there are less nutrients in the media the mycelium starts forming rhizo patterns. And I personally observed the same phenomenon. Also, 65F is alright, although 70-80F is ideal. I usually colonize and fruit at 65-70F.

That does make a lot of sense. It's become aggressive because it needs to find food.

Thanks guys for the quick updates and information on this rhizomorphic growth stuff. just brought in a thermometer this morning. 80.6* F with heater nearby. was 62* without heater. Im definately keeping the heater around. i hate checking up on them daily b/c i know time is the most important factor and patience is key, but the mycelium is growing significantly overnight! i do minimize touching them and drafts to not hit them because there in a closed storage unit. i usually open the door and just poke my eyes in there.

That makes more sense. It is natural to deter death in any possible way. Rhizo was just trying to find some food for his family lol...

The jars i have going now have crazy mycelium. Some of them look like they have big knots that push out the side, others have ropey myc crawling across the glass, they look pretty awesome.
