WBS 1qt Jars - 7 days still no signs of colonization.
    #1592659 - 05/30/03 10:23 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

7 Days ago today I filled 4 1qt wide mouth jars 2/3's full of WBS.  The WBS was soaked for 12 hours, and left to drain for 1 hour prior to pressure cooking.  The jars pc'd just fine, and were shaken up while still hot, then left to cool overnight.  The next day, 2 jars were injected with 10cc's of spore solution in water (5cc each over the 4 sides of the jar) 2 more jars were injected with 8ccs (4/each) of honey solution.  It's been 7 days and there is 0 colonization going on, they jars have been kept in a dark incubator at 85 degrees the entire time, with only brief exposures to light.  When you look at the jars, they seem to have the same "wetness" level that other images I have seen on the Internet.  Is it possible the WBS I used might have contained some fungicide that even after soaking is foiling me?  I know both types of solutions I used work, BRF jars shot up at the same time are doing damn well, the honey tek ones are nearly fully colonized.  Sorry I cannot provide pics of the jars, but every time I connect my camera to my USB port I get a blue screen....... :frown:

WIld Bird Seed, generic term for the large bags of cheap birdseed you can get at any grocery store.

Did you read the label on the WBS you used? Any that contains a fungicide  should say so. You may also have gone a bit heavy on the amount of solution in each jar. My foaf doesnt measure, but on average he can innoc five (5) quarts of WBS with one (1) 12 CC syringe, with results like this inside of 7 days:

What size hole or holes are in the lids & what type filter material did you use?

Are you sure the spore and honey solution that went into those jars was viable?

I've read and re-read the package, and if it did contain any, they didn't say so. The jars have a 1/2-3/4inch hole in the top, and are filtered by the synthetic disk filters that can be gotten from places like mycosupply.com. I know the honey is viable because some BRF jars shot at the same time are kicking ass It could be I over wet them cause i shot them up with a bit much.

Hmmmmm You should have some colonization by now. Odd. After 4 days, under ideal circumstance a WBS jar should look about like this:

My foaf does five (5) tiny squirts, one in each corner agianst the glass & one down the center. The pic above shows one side of the jar & the other side looks the same.

Try any generic (primarily millet based) WBS, the cheaper the better. It works. Why it isn't for you is a stumper?

Hrm, okay, so my tempurate/handling/jar setup should be kosher, and i need to look into poor WBS, or perhaps too much liquid post injection stunting/killing thr growth. I'm going to give them till 14 days before I say screw it and just remake them, picked up some rye so might attempt that in 2 of the jars, and some different WBS in 2 of the jars.

Just FYI, if there is a PetsMart in your area area? They have a brand called "BIRD BASICS" in 40 pound bags on sale now for $7. LOL..........I think my foaf has gone through over 1000 pounds of it with a hitch.

pacience... give it time... even though its been a week it can take a while for that shit to germinate.... you sound like u did everything ok... did u heat the syringe before each jar?, and if so did u let it cool before inoculating? if it was too hot you could have killed the spores...

I took 12cc's of Mazzy spores and dumped that into 1/4 sterile water in a 1/2 pint jar to thin the spores out a bit then innoculated 8 peurto trays with 30+cc solution left afterwards. It took 12 days before I saw signs of growth on the bottom of a Pyrex dish. 1) because spore count had been lowered (which isn't a bad thing) and 2) because the solution stopped at the top layer of BRF/Verm and germed there taking 3-4 days to get to the bottom of the pyrex dish.

If you used that much solution and got nothing then at all then there is a chance that 1) You didn't squart he spore solution down the glass but more towards the middle, 2) that there were no spores in the solution, and 3) Fungicide.

Where did you get the syringe?

I can rule out the squirt method, since I took extra special care for solution to run down the length of the jar, as stated before, other BFR jars shot up with same solutions all of them are alive.

It has taken me seven days using wbs to see colonization in my jars, but I'm just starting to think Aussie is a slow colonizer since the PF jars are taking forever too.  Anyway my point is nothing helps grow these better than patience (and knowledge, and a good incubator, and supplies, oh yeah and spores). :smirk:
