Day 11 Pics, Spore Print Age
    #1592807 - 05/30/03 01:26 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Johnny's little friends are coming alonq quite nice. He's happy he'll be fruiting the first flush soon. Check out his lighting-fast growing Stropharia cubensis (Golden Mexican).

What do yall think

Experienced mycologists -- what's the best age for a shroom to be made into a print? When the cap has completely opened up and has begun to throw spores right

My friend takes his prints after the cap is fully open and starts to flatten out.

Nice crop.

Sweet bro!!   Very nice flush.  How many pints or half pints cakes did you case there?

Take your first print when the veil breaks, then take your next print the next day when it flattens out a bit. Nothing says you can only get one print from a cap.
Make sure it can breath a little when you take it.

Some fun pics

Yes, take 2 prints each cap, but make sure they're dark. I wouldn't take more than that unless your cap is producing prolifically.

Thx Magash.

Oh and with scraping the cap for spores - what method do you use? Or do you just store it and collect the spores afterwards

I recommend next time using a case or tray that is not clear, this way you can get more flushes.

Growkit huh. I was wondering what the ideal amount of substrate would be for a shoebox size rubbermaid.

Don't scpae the cap to get spores. To make prints, set the open cap on a piece of foil and cover with a drinking glass or a tupperware to avoid any contams falling on the foil. Let the cap rest gills down on the foil for 12-24 hours or even more depending on how dark you want the print. When it's ready, lift the cap with a needle so you don't touch the print and contaminate it. Fold the foil print in half and tape the edges. (Look at the pic. He's got a cap on foil being covered with a tupperware)

It is a growkit. It's Johnny's first time afterall. But next time he will have a large, professional project  The substrate is wheat/vermiculite btw.

Thanks Klingon

nick, why does a bin that is not clear yield more flushes?

the clear bin allows light to reach the substrate at the bottem and sides
that will trigger the myc to start producing mushrooms there....
if u dont pick those shrooms they will rot and fuxxor your whole caseing....
so make sure you use a dark container, or tape up the sides so no light gets through...

an unclear bin will yield more abundant flushes because energy is "wasted" growing in squished areas (not that strong of a point) but the main thing is you have to take it out and pick them every flush, bruising and hurting the mycelium, unless you crumble and case every flush, which actually works great lol, but thats all the reasons really, and of course, for convenience sake-opaque is better.

I still don?t see why people keep casings in the container. Missing out on side shrooms makes for smaller flushes.
