Anyone mind giving some monotub help?
    #15926402 - 03/09/12 07:55 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hey there all, I am going to be starting my first monotub soon, and since I am a broke ass and can't afford a PC at the moment, I picked up this "Mono Tub Fill Kit" from Out-Grow, a fellow shroomery sponsor. I was curious on how big of a tub I should buy for this.

Also, to clarify, I will be colonizing with the Rye Berries, then once those are 100% colonized, I mix together the spawn and the manure and place in the mono tub, and let colonize. Once 100% colonized, let it sit for a week, then add the casing the kit comes with for a casing layer.

I then mist the casing layer every now and then to keep rH up. This all sound right?
I have done a lot of searching, but all I get is 6 year old threads with similar questions, but no answers. So I finally decided to make a thread and ask you all.

Any help would be appreciated.

I won't. Also, I was looking at this light to hang above my tub, think it is an overkill?

yes. overkill for one tub. $65 seems a little steep.

these 'work lights' reflect the light right on to your project and are under $10.

good luck.

what comes in the kit?  rye, bulk substrate and casing material?

edit. clicked on the link and saw the contents of the kit.

Alright, where could I pick those lights up at? Do they raise the power bill much?

Also this is what the kit includes.

-Three, one pound bags of rye berries
-Two, five pound bags of Manure Based Mushroom Substrate
-one, one pound bag of casing

you can get them everywhere ... from Home Depot to Walmart.

they come with a spring clamp for attaching the light to something that is handy.

they will raise your utilities the equivalent of one light bulb ... get a CFL .. daylight 6500k. ... or you can put your tub in a room where it gets natural light.

Well, I plan on putting the tub in my closet so it is hidden from view.

Also, how do you guys keep your temperature at 70F? Do you just keep a little space heater next to the tub or do you use a heating pad?

If you're cultivating cubes, I would skip casing them. Cubes don't require it.

Good Luck!

So I know this kinda off topic but I want to ask you if you have had any experience with Rye berry bags? I've posted a thread much earlier today but not one single response:frown: I know this is off subject but I didn't want to start a new thread since I already did one today. thanks

I agree about fruiting cubensis uncased.

However, for a first time monotub or tray cultivator the casing layer is a really nice 'shock absorber' .... it retains water so the substrate surface doesn't dry out .. and it soaks up water in case of over misting.

once you get it figured out (by doing it a couple of times), you can go uncased with no worries.

That's true. When I moved on to bulk I cased my trays at first, then tried it without a casing layer and noticed no real difference.

That is what I have read, so I might skip the casing layer.

Alright, I'll turn my house heat up. Also, like I mentioned before, I did a quite a bit of searching, but I couldn't find the correct answers.

This is my first time I will be using Rye Berry bags.

Thank you all so much for the replies, helps me a lot. I will be sure to keep you guys updated with my grow.

I plan on cultivating some Gulf Coast Cubensis.

Be sure to cover yer sub w/plastic and poke holes for AE. Once the sub is 100% colonized turn your light on and watch for knotting, then case. It might not take a whole week just keep an eye out for pinning!!! p.s. dont case it too thick, about a 1/4 inch will be plenty w/ manure. also keep an eye on tempurtare whilst it colonizes, manure makes ALOT of heat so DONT incubate!! Good luck, and post some pics of yer massive fruits :mushroom2:

Where should I put a temperature/rH gauge in the mono tub? Any ideas?

So, I use black tape to cover where the substrate is so that way no light hits the sides of the substrate causing side pinning, but I also plan on using a liner so I don't get any water pooling.

Once my sub is 100% colonized, why should I induce light? Shouldn't I let it sit another week to let the mycelium finish eating all the nutrients?

Temperature guage outside the tub not exceeding 72f if at all possible, temp inside the tub will be about 5deg warmer. Not black tape, sarran wrap or similar, poke holes for gas exchange, and turn lights on to induce pinning, once it starts pinning uncover, and give FAE and 85%+ humidity
