It's 512MByte max. And I'm fairly sure that the 128Mbit support refers to size of the individual chips on the stick. i.e. a 128 MByte stick could have 8 x 128 MBit chips on it or 16 x 64 MBit chips on it. Therefore you're only going to get the 512MByte max if you are using DIMMs which have 128MBit chips. Most 128MByte, 256MByte and 512Mbyte DIMMs these days do use 128MBit technology.

I'm afraid that if you want to go higher than 512MByte then you need a new board. :frown:

I assure you that the sticks in those pictures are all 128 MByte Dimms.

The first one has 16 x 64MBit = 1024MBit = 128MByte This one is double sided 8 chips per side.

The second one is single sided, half as many chips but twice as much RAM per chip. 8 x 128MBit = 1024MBit = 128MByte.

The fact that something is double or single sided is not based on whether it is 64/128MBit technology but on the total amount of memory available - its a physical limitation. I have a 512MByte stick that has 8 per side. That stick uses 256MBit chips - there wouldn't be enough space to have 16x128MBit chips on each side. Also, unusually in my days as a Desktop Spport person I saw a 64MByte stick with just 2 chips on either side.

Quote:

So, on a 64mbyte single sided board it will have 8x2mbyte chips... and on a 512mbyte single sided board it will have 8x64mbyte.

A 64 MByte board will have 8x8MByte chips or 8x64MBit chips - same thing

You will find that the manufacturers tend to use MBits and the vendors like to use MBytes. You just have to remember that there are 8 bits in a byte.

I expect the maximum amount of RAM is different because the board will open up a fixed amount of channels to the memory - this cannot be changed. And depending on the size of the chips at the end its maximum is determined.
