Coffee Grinder question
    #15918803 - 03/08/12 10:28 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Can i use a coffee grinder to grind brown rice into flour if its been used to grind ALOT of coffee? I know I should clean it first but there will still be some coffee on it will it matter? I know coffee is used in some teks so I dont think it would but I would definitely like some professional input on this... Thanks in advance.

I'd grind up a batch or two of flour then dump them. That should clean it up. But I don't think the tiny amount of coffee dust will hurt anything.

Good Luck!

trying to grind your own flour in anything but very small amounts without a proper grain mill is like throwing a rock at a tank. you'll burn your motor dead on that coffee grinder (unless its a restuarant qulaity commerical grinder) before you'll have made enough rice flour for a few dozen cakes.

i bought an old school style hand cranked flour mill on ebay for about a hundred bucks.  its fucking sweet for making my own flour belnds for baking... when i do cakes i buy brf.

I am looking for any shiitake strains, any oyster strains, and lions mane cultures. i got cool edibles to trade.

"Mycologists on the other hand grow for the love of growing.  They want to experiment with various species, substrates, and fruiting environments. They'll move on to isolate strains, attempt hybridization, and in general treat cultivation as an artform, rather than a chore that must be performed as a means to an end.  They'll work twice as hard for a ten percent gain, just for the love of perfection..."

I used a coffee grinder to grind my brown rice, and I didn't bother cleaning it out first. I figured the coffee might add some extra food for the mycelium, people add it to bulk substrate all the time.

I ended up having 1 out of 5 jars contam on me, but I'm pretty much positive that that was due to my sloppy inoculation procedure and not due to the coffee.

It did end up burning out the motor on the coffee grinder though, as the poster above me said.

Ultimtely, you can use Whole Grain Brown Rice. There are a few pretty good teks on these forums.  WOuld save you from having to grind up all that flour and you would only need vermiculite as the top contam barrier layer.

You can, and it works pretty great. Fresh flour is so awesome!

I really like to use a blender that has metal to metal contacts (the rubber ones wear out fast). I put it at a 45 degree angle and fill it with 50% rice and put a brick ontop. Works awesome, you get a bunch of cups in like 3 mins.
