Thoughts on BRF cake sterilization w/o PC
    #15873772 - 02/27/12 10:56 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I'm getting wet spot on ALL of my jars (two different batches), and I'm wondering if my sterilization could be the problem. I covered the jars in foil and basically steamed them in a big pot for 90 mins. No pressure cooker. The tek on mushroomvideos.com said this was good enough.

The only other conclusion I can draw is bad spores, since I think my inoculation was pretty good. Got them from SporeFarmer.com before I knew of this site's sponsors. I've since heard bad things about that vendor.

Also, I'm posting some quality pics of wet spot since it seems a lot of people here don't know how to focus a camera!

I can't get the pictures to expand for some reason.

I can only see condensation.

Where does the wet spot start?

If it's your spore solution it would start at the inoculation points.

If it's your boiling that's the problem it will start at the bottom usually.

Sporefarmer use to be a sponser, until they
Weren't for some reason. I built my network
Of off there spores. Any way those droplets
Are not harmful as long as you don't get a pool
At the bottom.

those dont look bad at all.

my first time was with a bit pot, boiling 5 of those jars.

it ended up working fine but if you want to play with grain, id just shell out for a pc.

So maybe next time I should use a little less water in the BRF mix if it's condensing like that? I haven't seen anyone else's colonization pics that have droplets like that in them.

You're good to go! The more they colonize the more "wet spots" you will get, when I let a cake consolidate, the whole jar is "wet".

Too wet? It's beginning to pool a little bit on the bottom.

Substrate was probably a little wet to begin with.

Still fine as long as they smell like good mushroom and not rotten.

Looks a little slimy but it's probably just condensation and the way the myc is pressing up against the glass

condensation is going to happen anytime there are two varying temperatures. It does not have to be extremely hot or extremely cold.  Keep in mind that mycellium growing creates it's own heat and so it will always be a fraction warmer inside the jar than out, thus you will see a lot of condensation. While it could be due to adding to much water when making the jars, it is more likely just normal moisture. I get them in all my jars and have never had a slimey one, ever.

Thanks. There is also some really fluffy almost cotton-like stuff in a few spots. Totally normal, right?

I knocked this one up on 2/20. Based on how it looks...another couple weeks before I birth and fruit them?

I did mine with the same technique and have the same condensation problems, but I don't think it's an issue.

jus give em at least 7 days after 100% colonization and you'll be good..

and yea its pretty normal  to have wispy myc.. everything looks good from what i can see

cobweb is really thin and kinda grows like a mat over the surface with a grey tint.. seem you have healthy myc though

Yah, my PC only holds about 4 jars max so I opted to boil the cakes both times and it came out great with no contams.

Forget the pressure cooker as long as you are working with BRF. You only need the pressure cooker to kill the endospores of grains. Even RR, in his videos does not use a pressure cooker for BRF cakes. But honestly, bulk is way better than BRF cakes and getting a good pressure cooker will allow you to work with grains.

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.

There's a part of every living thing that wants to become itself: the tadpole into the frog, the chrysalis into the butterfly, a damaged human being into a whole one. That is spirituality.
