RR - Your Greenhouse
    #15908698 - 03/06/12 11:35 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Dear Mr. Rabbit:  Was looking at the greenhouse you made in this pic:

and I've tried to read as many of your posts on the subject as I can, and I know it's pretty straight-forward but I want to make sure I do this right and am hoping you can just verify/correct my my thinking on the plan and answer a few quick questions:

I have a couple of those chrome shelving units as well:

It sounds like yours didn't hold up under the humidity? Would you recommend I use plastic shelving units instead?

It looks like you made a big frame out of 1-1/2" black PVC, wrapped the whole thing in plastic (minus the door), secured it with cable ties, made a big flap for the door that you rolled up, but also have another piece for the roof that angles down to let condensation run off the back, is that right? And you put some slits and/or 4" holes around the plastic for FAE (?) Anything else you'd recommend as far as actual construction goes?

Then do you have two cool mists? One on each side shooting straight up? And you time these and play around with the FAE openings to achieve 95% humidity (?)

And you put trays of perlite around the bottom, as well as use trays of perlite to fill in any current blank slots on the shelves (?)

How often did you maintain/clean/surface disinfect the greenhouse shelves/plastic?

I know you are onto bigger projects but if you were to make a greenhouse this size again is that pretty much how you'd do it?

Many thanks for any advice you may have for me...

I would think if you prime and paint the metal you wouldn't have a problem. Just get some a primer spray paint and then black gloss spray paint or whatever color you want.

I had a metal shower rack that was "pre-sealed" and it got rust. I personally would paint over it just to be safe.

Lol, okay I just found RR's post about his chrome shelves.

Quote:

"...  I made the mistake of getting that exact model from Lowes when I was filming my DVD so I could get some nice shots of my mini-greenhouse.  It was totally rusted within two weeks of putting it in there, even though the package said it was chrome plated.  It's typical made in china crap and worthless.  Two months later I tried to take it apart to go back to plastic shelves, and I had to cut it apart with a hack saw.  Even with my 7 lb sledge hammer, I couldn't bust the fittings loose, they were so rusty.

Either get plastic, or go to a farm supply and get galvanized fencing material, but not that made in china waste of money."

RR

Guess that answers that one - but I'm not sure if the ones I have are made in China or not - I didn't get them at Lowe's and they seem really well made. Hhmmm...  I'll have to go back to the store and take another  look at the boxes.

im no expert but i would say go with plastic due to the fact that chrome plated mild steel does not take long to rust in humid conditions. nothing manufactured after the 80s is build to last as companys would not make a profit if things lasted forever .Mr Rabbit would not comment on this thread as you named it after him . Do what he did , figure it out , trail and error .

I've been on jury duty most of this week, so haven't been around.

That's pretty much how I'd build another if I was going to.  The whole front opens up, and that door is just one length of plastic, and I used a 2" pvc pipe at the bottom to hold it shut.  The gaps up the edges were left unsealed for fresh air, plus a few holes were cut as well for fresh air.

Make sure the cool mists can shoot straight up to the top.  If they hit a shelf, the mist condenses and drips back down, making a mess.
