unorthodox drying technique
    #1591824 - 05/30/03 01:48 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Howdy,
first off I'd like to say I have had a look at the Drying/Storing info on this site but haven't been able to find the exact answer I'm looking for.

A friend gave me a small bag of mushrooms for my birthday. He gave them to me the same day he got them and I had noticed there was a little bit of condensation in the bag so when I got them home I poured them out onto a blank sheet of paper, seperated them, and left them in the bottom of a set of drawers well away from the heating vent in my room.

Today I had a look at them and they're all noticibly smaller and they've started turning a light brown (they were given to me as dark brown) and they seem a slight bit more fragile. I'm worried that maybe I've ruined these mushrooms and they're going rotten or something and will lose their magical qualities.

My question is: Is it safe to still eat these mushrooms? Has the quality been comprimised? Should I move them somewhere else?

Keep in mind I live at home with my parents so some storage ideas I can't use (refridgerator).

My apologies if this is covered somewhere else.

He gave them to you wet (undried) ? Were they at all bruised blue from handling? They pro'lly haven't rotted out after one day, they should still be good if they are in fact magic mushrooms.

well they should be fine-but i dont know about the brown color-are they cubes? and you shouldnt have lost any potency. if they arent cracker dry then set them in front of a fan and if you arent too humid where u live then a fan for a few days will get them cracker dry.

Or eat them now and skip the drying. Over time they will lose potency. One good thing I read a while ago is to store them in baggies that are in baggies filled with an unreactive gas, like neon or helium. apperantly this stops loss of potency.

Yeah they were wet. They'd also been washed (I tried to do a spore print and barely anything showed up after 12 hours). They didn't appear bruised they were a dark brown colour including the gills and stem.

Now that they're drying they're turning like a light shade of yellow/brown. I am told they were picked a couple of days before they were given to me. I tried to "bruise" the cap of one but I couldn't see any colour change.

Jake: I am unsure of what species these mushrooms are meant to be. I'm in Canberra, Australia and I believe psilocybe cubensis (sp?) grow here. Perhaps someone can say yay or nay to that idea?

if they are definately psilocybe cubensis,
they will definately show blue bruising.

Ok this is going to sound like the biggest newbie question you've ever heard in your life so be ready for it:

I don't know exactly what the blue bruising on mushrooms is meant to look like. I gather it's meant to look blue but I don't entirely understand what I'm meant to be seeing. I haven't seen any pictures nor have I seen any mushrooms "bruise blue".

What shade blue are we talking here?

if he picked them himself, it's very likely they are psilocybe subaeruginosa.

however, is there any bruising at all on them? like, any blue patches of colour anywhere on them? subaeruginosa is most likely the only psilocybe growing in canberra at the moment, and bruises a very distinct dark blue-almost black fairly quickly
