the top layer is just plain vermiculite. it keeps contaminates out, and has no nutrition to grow mushrooms.
birth them one week after they are fully colonized (the top layer will not colonize)
please don't delete your posts. it fucks up the search engine.

Just remove the top layer of verm. dunk your cakes for 18 hours, roll in verm. and then put in your FC.

the top layer of verm. will not colonize. just open the jar, turn it on its side and just lightly tap to get all loose verm off of your cakes.
simple.

Ok
1st Time Grower/ Noob Question
(Trying To Do This Right)
I Understand Dunk And Roll, do i have to dunk for the first flush?
or can i just pour some bottled water on each cake...
if i must dunk and roll is it better to use bottled water from the store or water from my sink?
and since i didnt make my own verm do i just roll it in the verm i removed from the cakes?
Any Advice will Be Greatly Appreciated Thanks

you dunk and roll on your first flush...just dunk on every flush after that
if your tap water is okay to drink, then it is okay to dunk
you dont make verm, you buy it...dont use that old stuff from the jars...it is full of contams, it has been your filter during colonization

yes you have to dunk first, ur sub looses alot of water by the time its finished colonizing
do you have city water, if so that is fine.. I live where my water comes from a well and is very hard water(i can even lite my tap on fire) and is hard om my msy
go buy verm DO NOT USE THE SHIT OFF UR CAKES it wont b enough anyways

See if you can find some vermiculite at a hardware store.

is rolling after dunking necessary? or is it just a gimmick?
im dunking my cakes today
wouldnt the mycellium alone keep the bacteria out?
im not tryna spend a 20bill on a bag of verm if its not necessary...
mushies in nature dont have vermiculite to protect them and my grow kit seems a lot safer/ cleaner than the forest...

I don't believe that it is necessary to roll the cakes. You should be fine without the verm. I thought the purpose was to help retain water but I really have no idea as I'm no expert

The vermiculite used as a top layer in the jars acts as a barrier against contams. The vermiculite you roll cakes in after dunking provides moisture to the mycelium/fruits as they're expanding.
