Issues with monotub humidity (maybe?) -- only side/bottom pinning

Hey guys. I've had a few successful monotub grows during the past few months in which I've taken up this hobby. However, every once in a while I get a tub that only gives me side-pins and/or (even worse) bottom pins... yuck. I've got one going now in which the bottom pins are super plentiful, and practically all I have.
I always let my tubs fully colonize and consolidate for around 3-4 weeks. They are multispore, coir/verm/coffee/gypsum, and it always looks like a field of snow when I open them to initiate fruiting. I fan/mist around 1-3 times a day, time permitting.
All of the tubs are designed the same, with four holes at substrate level and two holes near the top, for polyfill.
The only thing I can think of that would cause this is humidity, because if I'm getting pins then the multispore should fruit on top if the RH is right.
Should I try casing them?
Thanks in advance.

You should absolutely try casing them and monitoring your RH with a hygrometer.

I always case my tubs, especially in the winter when my room's RH drops significantly. It's also great for beginners, gives some wiggle room if you know what I mean...

I pretty much knew that casing would be the answer to this problem. I should have just asked how to go about casing my tubs. I was thinking about using the 50/50 casing that adds crushed oyster shell and hydrated lime. I have all of the ingredients, I'm just not 100% sure about how to proceed with them. From this webpage, I guess I would use the following mix...?:
15 1/2 cups vermiculite 15 1/2 cups peat moss 4 1/2 cups crushed oyster shell 1.2 cups of hydrated lime 15 cups of water
Sound good? And should I pasteurize or sterilize this casing mix, or does it not matter?
Also, do I case as soon as I put the tub together and initiate colonization, or do I case after colonization/consolidation? Do I fan and mist just as if there was no casing layer?
If someone could clarify the whole process of casing a monotub for me, especially addressing these questions, that would be great. I've searched, but I get conflicting instructions, or instructions that don't seem to apply to my set up.

I'm guessing you added a top layer of straight sub? I've ran into this problem and got through by removing the top layer.

Do you use a black garbage bag liner? Side pinning will almost always be an issue if you're using a clear tub without a liner. Even with an opaque tub it is still often a troublesome issue.
It accomplishes three things:
1)Blocks out light, which is a pinning trigger.
2)The liner clings to the substrate as it pulls away from the sides of the tub, preventing a micro climate optimal for pinning. Pins form where the conditions are optimal(IE- humidity and Fae). The area between the wall of the tub and the side of your substrate will be very high humidity, and if the side humidity is higher than the top then the sides will be where the majority of pins form.
3)Prevents pooling on the top of your substrate from when humidity builds on the walls of the tub and then runs down. It will collect under the liner, which is not an issue. If it bothers you, you can add a cap or two of hydrogen peroxide underneath the liner. Code:

I've tried adding a top layer and I've tried not adding a top layer. Generally, I don't do it, but I'm still experimenting with that aspect. This particular tub did not have a top layer. What I want to try and experiment with is casing, so I'm looking for answers to my previous post's questions.
Using a liner seems like a big headache to me. I taped up the sides of these tubs with gorilla tape, but didn't think the bottom would need it. I fully expected side-pins after the sub shrank in from the side during the first flush, but didn't think they would be a big issue. After this episode I'll be lining the bottoms with tape as well, and debating on whether or not I want to bother with liners.

yea.. i would just case with a thin layer of verm. i find a verm casing helps a lot when it comes to making a mono fruit properly...

You sound like me. I don't have any answers since this is my first grow, but do your tubs look like the pics I just posted? Hadn't seen your thread first. Oops!

Liners are a pain the ass to install, but side/bottom pins are a pain the ass too. The question is, which would you rather deal with?

I second the use of verm. In my experience I have had no better results with the use of 50/50 or the 50/50+ casings than I do with just straight verm. I never pasteurize it either but I just spread about .5-.75 inches over the top after my tubs have colonized and consolidated just as I put them into fruiting, then generously spray them with water everyday.

I don't do liners in any tubs anymore. I like the side pins when they come with everything else. Big flushes.
