Plexiglass silicone and monotub
    #15913894 - 03/07/12 12:56 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

So from what I have been reading silicone does not bind plexiglass and plastic tubs together. Dry well. I went to lowes today and found the Plexiglass and asked someone that worked there and asked what I can use to make plexiglass stay on the tub. He said that those 100% silicone will hold. And that any other silicone won't. Anyone find this to be true?

Never wanted to pay the extra cash to silicone & buy plexiglass for the tops of my tubs.
I just use Saran wrap w/ clear packing tape.

Make sure to score the lid & the side of the plexiglass before applying the silicone.
The silicone will adhere better w/ the scored glass & plastic.

Hmm just wondering do you have to remove the Saran wrap and put it back on every time you wanna take the lid off?

Nope. It's permanently taped to the tub.

How to Change a Colored Lid to a Clear Lid w/ Saran Wrap:

1.Trace Out where you’re going to make your cut w/ a Straight Edge & Marker.

a.You want to make sure to NOT to hit any of the supports for the tub’s Lid, as this will negatively affect the seal of the lid to the tub.

2.Cut your lid.

3.Put the Open lid on your Monotub and stretch the Saran Wrap over the lid to the exterior of the tote & lay the Saran Wrap inside the tub.
4.Tape the Saran Wrap to the exterior side of the tub.
a.Make sure to get the Saran centered & free of any wrinkles.
5.Stretch the Saran Wrap over the entire lid & set on the side of the tub.
6.Pull the Saran Taut towards the Sides of the tote that is NOT taped & tape down the sides of the Saran to the Corner of the Lid w/ Clear Packing Tape.

7.Now do the same to the Other side of the tub.
8.Cut off the Excess Saran wrap w/ a Sharp Knife or Box Cutter.
9.Now working on the center sides of the Lid, pull off little strips of the Clear Packing Tape & work from one side to the other, just to get the Saran Wrap Tight w/out ANY wrinkles.

a.Be careful when stretching, as it will tear easily, which we don’t want. It’s happened to me several times. Usually, I just toss the Saran Wrap & start over, but you probably could just put a little piece of tape over it.

10.Tape the Ends of the Saran Wrap to the End of the lid using long strips of Tape.
a.Be sure not to Over Tape the Ends, as this will negatively affect the Latching Mechanisms of the Lid. Just be careful around the Latching Handles & Underside of the Lid.

11.Now I move onto the sides. I pull Long strips of the Clear tape (just about half the length of the side of the Tote).
a.Be sure to Pull the Saran Wrap Tight using the Tape to adhere it Lengths wise With the Tote.
b.I move from One side of the Tote to the other as to help w/ everything being clear.

12.Lastly, I go around the end of the tote checking all the seals of the Tape. If I think a spot isn’t taped well enough, I’ll take a little extra Tape & tape that down.

I'm not really understanding so you can't take the lid off because it is taped to the tub?

In the plexiglass section of lowes they have a red and white tube of silicone hanging in the plexi section.  I used it for several tubs and it works just fine.  The saran wrap idea will work too but if you already have the plexi either that silicone or any gorilla glue will work.

Also the plexiglass is perfectly clear, makes it nice to look closely and/or take pictures since you want to keep your monotub lid on.

Well I'm going to have to take it off once it is fully colonized so I can mist.

The Saran wrap is attached to the lid, not the tub.
I've been using the same saran wrapped lids for years w/out any problems.
I don't use them for colonization though.

Ah now I'm understanding you thanks for the tek it's a good one. Why don't you use that lid for colonization?

Due to all the condensation that accumulates on it, it sags & may tear the saran wrap.
I've used them once before, and didn't like it.
Also, the saran wrap isn't really air tight on my lids, so it allows for too much AE during colonization of my bulk substrate.
