How can i use bags instead of jars to colonize wbs?
    #15912485 - 03/07/12 03:23 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I have used long time jars to colonize wbs, but now i want to make it a little easier to make bigger amounts of colonized wbs with bags but i have no clue how to make a bag that i can put to pressure cooker.

Can somebody give me some advices how its done?

I read somewhere that if you use bags, then you have to inoculate it with liquid culture, is that true or can i mix it with already colonized wbs?

I just prepped the seed, and wrapped the bag tight with rubber bands and rolled it in foil like a huge sub sandwich. Set it on empty jars on their side to keep out of water. When done and cool unwrap and tie the top with a rubber band. Undo rubber band and add agar wedge/wbs spawn, etc. Worked for me but I'm lucky.......miss the old pre-kid days.

NO
I use bags for grain spawn, and substrate.
you can use MS, LC, G2G, agar wedges etc.. ANYTHING you use jars for.

I also sterilize my substrate ( No flames) in bags.

If you have an impulse sealer, then it is really easy, just make sure you use presealable bags.
If not thats ok, you can go "old school"

*Place grain/substrate etc in bag
*cut a syringe in 1/2, with open ends on both sides.
*feed the bag end through the syringe, and bag down ( end will now be on the oustide of the syringe piece)

*fasten with rubber band

*fill the open end with polifill

*I like to add a doubled coffee filter over the polifill, use another rubber band to hold the coffee filter on.

*remove as much air as possible from the bag.
*place foil over the end to keep water from getting into the bag.

*fold the extra bag accordian style.
*place in you pc, BUT make sure no part of the bag touches the metal ( sides, bottom of the pc )
I use a large pre-wetted  towel to  esnure the bags dont touch any metal

IMPORTANT, you want to weight down the bags in some way, either a plate, an old weight, or as i am now using a brick.. you want something to make sure that if the bag expands, it doesn't block the pressure release valve or you could have an explosion

I have heard you can use the heavy duty ziplock freezer bags in pressure cookers.  Just wrap in foil like the other poster said. I also use the ziplock or Glad brand Plastic containers. Any container really that is Recycle-5. They come in all sizes from small to large and are pretty easy to work with.
