Ring of fog around jars
    #15906334 - 03/05/12 09:35 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I have some jars in which there appears to be a band of moist mold around the jar, evenly distributed and spread 360 degrees around the jar...it even makes the original mycelium patches look like ghosts under the mist.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

It's just condensation from the sound of it. The mycelium seem to squeeze the moisture out of the substrate and it condenses around the jar. Not sure if that's what's actually happening but that's what it appears to be.

Sorry no pictures possible.  It does look like condensation, though it's weird that it's just on certain jars and not all.  I suppose you could have one atmosphere in one jar and a slightly changed one in the next, depending on preparation.  The weirdest thing is it's a perfectly formed band around the jar, in width...very uniform.

There's an obvious visual difference between "mold" and plain "condensation". When you say mold, do you mean its a green or blueish ring around the jar? If that's the case than it's definitely not just condensation. If it's just colorless moisture than it's normal in most cases.

It might just be limestone deposits...
I always get rings around my jars after using the PC because the water in my area has a huge amount of limestone in it...
Or condensation

Word. I even get deposit crystals on my stainless steel pots.  I get the rings on the out side of my jars also.  Try wiping the outsides clean.

Does this look like it's on the inside or outside? If I put 2 TBS of white vinegar in my PC, my jars come out clear. If I forget, I get a fairly uniform "ghost" layer on the outside.

This is inside the jars.  That's what's odd about it.  Completely encircles the jar and obscures the mycelium patches from the inside.

I am almost 100% sure it as something to do with hot/standing water. I get this all the time and its nothing to worry about.

When you PCd/steamed your jars was your water level up on the jars? I get this too when the water level comes up the side of the jars, when the water boils off it leaves a ring on the jar where the water evaporated.
