Humidity Question...
    #15903830 - 03/05/12 01:53 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I have a few of my colonized, consolidated, and dunked cakes in my FC already.  I have about an inch of damp perlite on which the cakes are sitting.  I mist about twice a day and provide some fanned air about 3-4 a day.  However, the humidity is only about 70% and the temperature is only around 70 degrees.  Does anyone have any tips on how to bring both of these up?  I have a heating pad, but it is currently being used to colonize the rest of my jars.  I live in a basement apartment so its a bit dry and cool normally.  Does this mean it will just take a bit longer?  If so, I'm alright with that (though I am getting really anxious).  However, if it is detrimental to the final product I would like to fix the problem.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

You should have 4-5 inches of damp perlite in the bottom. Also do you have holes drilled into the FC on all 6 sides?

I'm a total beginner and bought my kit online for a first run at growing.  I have been following the directions that came with the kit but I trust all of the experienced growers on this site.  I will definitely add more perlite, but I had no idea about the drilling of the holes.  Thanks for the tip!

The heating pad is counter productive. It will dry your substrates out and bring you unwanted contamination.

Let it colonize at 70F. It will just be a little slower than the average time. This is a patience hobby after all

As far as your fruiting parameters go... It sounds like you are using a fruiting device that was not designed well, or you have a bad hygrometer that doesn't work properly. Try a Shotgun fruiting chamber. That way, you won't have to rely on faulty hygrometers to know if you have the correct fruiting parameters.

I do have a shotgun fruiting chamber.  I added more perlite so hopefully that will help.  I do have another question though...after I birthed my cakes and dunked them, A LOT of verm stayed on the top.  Is this ok or should I try to remove it?  I thought the dunking process might have helped take some off but it didn't do a whole lot.

I don't think the perlite alone is enough to keep the humidity up to 99%, my shotgun has got about 4-5 in of perlite and the humidity stayed around 71-80 without misting and goes up to 99 after misting, sooo i would recommend just misting the walls and the air and you'll be fine.

EDIT* and 70-75F are perfect fruiting conditions imo. youre off to great start. just wait a week or two for those pins.

I'm thinking my hygrometer might be shot.  It seems pretty soaked in the chamber.  I spray it probably 3-5 times a day and there is constantly moisture on the walls and top.  I hope this is the case anyways.

u can adjust a hygrometer by wrapping a wet warm towel around it and letting it sit for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes remove the towel and adjust the knob on the back until it sais 99%. Boom done. Check the "helpful links" sticky at the top of this forum it has loads of great links including one called mushroomvideos.com which has 4 vids with every tip youd ever need for a shotgun fruiting chamber. Good luck with your crop!
Also a good thing to do is spray the sides and top of the FC and when you dont see any water droplets spray it again. just dont over spray it..

Theres also something i wanted to add. At work this question came to my head, "can evaporation occur at time of high humidity". I ask this because i recently added a US to keep my humidity at a constant 99 and evaporation is number one pinn.ing trigger. Google says less evaporation occurs but would martha owners have something different to say about this
