flame sterilization

Today, I was outside enjoying the nice weather and my neighbor's rabbit came over. He took a fat shit in my lawn and then pondered these questions:
"Ok so I tried the Bic lighter tek to sterilize my syringe and it left a black mess on my needles. What other options do I have besides an alcohol lamp? I have a backpackers stove that runs on white gas...would that work or would it leave a carbon residue like butane?
Also, does the needle need to be glowing red-hot everytime I sterilize?"
That's all the bunny had to say before he hopped off.

Use a cotton piece with rubbing alcohol to clean the needle after you flame it. Maybe you'll get some change in color, which is ok, but not any "black mess" like you say.

A butane lighter will do the job, and the char is just a pain but won't effect your results.
Here's how I did it: -Flame until red hot -Wipe off char with moist Lysol or Clorox wipes until needle is cooled down. -Inoculate 4 holes in 1jar with about .25cc each -repeat.
I used the same clorox wipe for 6 jars, letting it sit on top of its case while i was inoculating. After 6 jars the wipe was all dirty with char and some verm so I changed wipes after that.
0% contams so far.

There is no need to sterilize the needle between each jar, as long the only thing you touch with it is the sterile jar holes or foil.

Dont worry about getting red hot. I never have. Why dont u just use alcohol or lysol to wipe them down?

The rabbit used his white gas backpackers stove to sterilize the needle. He told me that it worked great (it only took ~5 seconds to make the needle glow red).
2 concerns the bunny expressed:
1) A piece of verm got caught inside the needle, and no matter how much the rabbit tried to "burn it out", it wouldn't.
2) He got a little excited with the efficiency of the stove and burnt a little section of the syringe (the flange that connects the main cylinder to the needle) and when he inoculated the pf jars a little drop of solution would form where the syringe was burned. However, the bunny noticed -aside from the accident- all the jars got ~1 cc of B+, flame sterilizing after EVERY jar (he's a tad anal retentive).
Should my neighbor's rabbit be worried?

well as long as you didn't kill the spores should be fine....just curious has anyone else tried JUST using alcohol swabbing? I did a couple diff innoculations this way and haven't had a prob yet...lot easier and safer than trying too get the needle red hot

What's dangerous about trying to get the needle red hot?
