Oh, but there's one thing we've managed not to address until now--
This whole loan thing is ridiculous. That has seriously got to stop. We're in agreement on that one too. I would like to see a society where people can get a real education without putting themselves in half a lifetime of debt. I'm not sure what the solution is, but loans aren't the answer to anything, we've got way too many broke-ass people spending beyond their means in this country.

When I first went to sign up at CC seven years ago, I had to wait about five minutes to see a guidance counselor, and there were dozens of chemistry and biology courses available.
Now, I usually have to wait 2-4 hours to see a guidance counselor, and I have to fight to get into the classes I need. There are very few to choose from and a lot of people need those classes. I've always gotten into them because I go beyond the call of duty to impress the instructors, so no personal complaints, but it's honestly ridiculous that it has to be this way.
It makes me really wish I hadn't waited until I was 23 to have that magical revelation that education is worth its weight in gold. I've gotten a lot out of the CC system so far and I'm glad it's there, but at this rate, I don't know how much longer it will be. And I know a ton of welfare queens turned medical professionals thanks to the CC system. This is really important stuff.
whoops! sorry I seemed to think you were talking about Universities.
In my opinion I think the entire department of education should be cut. An interesting thing to think about: it costs around $10,000 to educate each student per year in the public school system. Do you think if children all went to private school that it would be so expensive? Looking at current prices, yes, but if there was no public education, it would be dominated by private businesses aka schools. The market would dictate the quality. Teachers would be paid based on merit, not tenure.
I've had so many teachers throughout my years in public school that would have been fired if they worked in a private school. Plus, I want to be able to choose the type of education my child receives. I learned a lot of completely useless shit in school. Never once was I required to take any kind of economics or financing class. Why? I would rather decide the things my child learns rather than the federal government.

If the government took all the money it spends on education k-12, and gave that back to the parents, they could all afford to privately educate their children.

I'm honestly not sure where I stand on public education vs. private education. I haven't read up much on the supposed benefits of having education totally privatized, but I have serious doubts about that, which I'll get into later.
On the one hand, I think public education is a great idea. It can only benefit the country to have a high standard of education that benefits everybody, regardless to socioeconomic station. If you can guarantee that everybody, no matter how dirt-poor, has a certain baseline of linguistic, historical, scientific, mathematic, and vocational training, prosperity should follow.
But public education is most definitely fucked! It seems like the more we try to save it, the worse it gets. We've decided math is all that really counts and the rest is wishy-washy bullshit that can be dictated by interest groups, but we can't even get good math scores out of that strategy. I don't know WTF is wrong.
I have to admit, I don't like the idea of privatizing education. While I agree there's a wisdom in being allowed to choose what your kids learn, I'm not comfortable with that idea unless the government subsidizes the cost for families that can't afford an education for their kids; and all kids must have access to the same quality of education. If you've ever looked at countries where large proportions of the population don't get a decent education (read: the middle east, sub-Saharan Africa), they're complete fucking wastelands. If you'll pardon the tautology, this is an example of how making life better for everybody makes life better for everybody.
I'm also not comfortable with the idea that such huge numbers of kids might get sent to schools that disregard basic biology in favor of creationism. The last thing we need is more creationists in this country.

Well private schools already exist, and they are largely religious
If all education was private, it would be really cheap. People would have more money because they would be taxed less as well. This is my ideal world anyway...
You would get to choose what your child learned. Of course all schools would have the basics of reading, writing, math, etc. except you could offer a lot of different specialty subjects as well.
Think of how many Universities are private, it's the same idea, minus the ridiculous price.
I'm smoking some hash, gonna play some mass effect...good discussion guys

Just whipped out the peace pipe myself and Mass Effect rules. But I think I'm going to watch some stand-up comedy, myself... George Carlin or Bill Maher, maybe.
I gotta agree, I've enjoyed this thread a lot so far. Finding common ground with people of diametrically opposed political viewpoints? My very favorite.

Oh and BTW yes I know private schools exist .
It's the TOTAL privatization of education that makes me wary. I actually got sent to a private "Pre-Kindergarten" school called Mustard Seed. My parents didn't get the Biblical reference and I was forced to pray every day against their will.

I think I'm going to watch this instead of comedy.
I personally have stopped trying to make successful threads, I do much better blowing up other people's threads.
This has been a good'un though. Congrats AA.
