Turning a profit
    #15907929 - 03/06/12 07:49 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Now I know there are large scale mushroom farms that supply commercially and these guys probably own the market for the most part but when I was in college, the father of one of my chefs made his living driving around picking mushrooms and selling them. I was just wondering if I could maintain growing as a hobby and make a little cash here and there without starting a large scale operation. If you've done it or do it, how do you go about finding business and what liabilities do you have to worry about?

I think your best bet is to grow something like morels or oysters and go to a local grocery store or restaurant. Basically just go in with a sample and ask them if they would want them? I think the restaurant is going to be a better bet because they are probably expecting to pay more.

Good luck!

edit:// Unless you are planning on spending a LOT of time on this, dont expect to make too much. youll probably get something like $5/lb for these guys.

What kind of mushrooms are we talking about here? .... haha.

But sure, if you're good at finding truffles and can find pounds of them, there is a lucrative business to be made.

Some restaurant's serve truffle soup for $40 a bowl... The syringes for some of those specialty mushrooms go for upwards of $5,000 to $10,000 depending what type of mushroom they're growing.

Mostly just different strains of oysters for now. I guess I'm just planning ahead and wondering what my options would be. How much space and time I would be putting into it and how long would I go before it started feeling like a job. Thinking about it a little more, I'm started to see how extensive the process would be to maintain a foothold and turn a profit. I want to continue enjoying this hobby and I have a feeling money could ruin that pretty quickly.

Doubtful.  Stores won't buy from you unless you can guarantee a certain level of delivery every week.  You won't be able to grow a pound here and a pound there and get any chef or produce managers to talk to you.

I'd suggest growing as a hobby for a few years, and if you get good at it and want to expand later, go for it.  However, be prepared to spend a fortune getting set up, and expect a few years of working to pay for it all before you finally begin to realize a profit.

Yeah, I know some hobbyist gardeners that grow fruits and vegetables and sell them at farmers markets. He will never get rich that way, but he does make a few extra hundred bucks every now and then.  If that is all you are after, then you could try a farmers market. But RR is right.  If you can not have a steady supply, restaurants and grocery stores are out. And a stready supply means probably prepping new spawn every day so that you will eventually be able to harvest everyday. You would probably need a sizeable air and humidity controlled facility and and a good supply of grains. And either multiple large Pressure cookers or one large industrial sized pressure cooker.
