Compost ph 8
    #15907662 - 03/06/12 05:37 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hi,

I just mixed up a compost substrate and the PH reading ended up being 8.

I know contaminants hate high PH, and mycelium can tolerate it, even up to 8?

How can I decrease the PH to 6ish without adding a crapload of Peat moss?

Use lime to lower the P.H of the sub.

Hybrid

Gypsum is a buffering agent which helps to minimize PH swings.

Gypsum isn't used to lower pH either.  Sulfur is used if one desires a lower pH.

A pH of 8 is about perfect to start out with.  During colonization it will naturally drop due to mycelial activity.  Most mushrooms fruit best at around pH 5.5 to 6.5.
