Consequences of shaking too much
    #15903044 - 03/05/12 10:17 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

So I read that it is recommended that you only shake once during the colonization period, otherwise it'll be counter-productive. The thing is that I've shaken my bags many times, the last time was yesterday where one of the bags was in 5 weeks into colonization, after shaking i noticed that the inside wasn't very much covered with mycelium or the white stuff as you might call it..

Is it possible to draw the assumption that my actions have delayed full colonization?

each time u shake ur damaging the myc which it needs to recover from thats why its suggested to do just 1 shake  and the inside is always the last to colinize

I think that the idea is that if you need to shake it beyond the 20% colonization point, then something bad is inhibiting growth.  I just did G2G and on the second or third day I was around 20% colonized.I shook. Three days later I am nearing 100%.

So from now this point on I should just sit on my hands and wait until it's fully colonized?

Yes, you do not want to over shake the bags/jars to many times. Like Dragonnreffer said, over shaking will bruise the mycelium and prolong the recovery of the mycelium.

Another reason is that every time you shake a bag/jar you're dropping the co2 levels that build up while the mycelium is consuming its food source, dropping the co2 to low will cause the mycelium to colonize slower.

But would it be okay to do some grain to grain transfers?

If you were 5 weeks into colonization, and you shook your bag, them wait 2-3 more days without touching it, as hard as that will be to do, just leave it, you'll probably be astonished at the growth by then. Patience is the key to success in mushroom cultivation.
