I enjoy riding a fixed gear for a few reasons.

First, the basic idea that having less moving parts means less maintenance--also, not having the chain pass through a derailleur reduces friction on the bike chain--and having only a single set of gears reduces the weight of the bike a noticeable amount.

Then, there is the idea that riding a fixed gear gives a much more intuitive riding experience. You do not have any gears to change, so your mind is set completely free from this to focus on other aspects of the bike ride--and the fact that your pedalling speed in directly related to your bike speed means that you are able to feel your speed, and bring out slight adjustments to speed very subtly--and though i do recommend one to still attach at least one brake to their bike for safety, while riding a fixed gear it is your legs that are your brake--by slowing down the peddling you control your speed completely--it used to be a favourite challenge of mine to get through my entire journey without having to use my hand break, but instead control my speed with my pedalling--an enjoyable experience.

I used to feel that fixed gears were similarly pointless--than a bought a recycled fixed gear, and while i waited for the freewheel to arrive that i had ordered, i rode the fixed gear around--when the part finally arrived and i 'upgraded' my bike, i only rode it for a couple days before i reverted back to a fixed gear.

I use an internal gear hub and love it.  I commute about 10 miles a day, with hills and often in the cold rain.

I dont think I would ever go to a different style unless I changed my riding habits.

Very well said.  I have a fixed gear as well, and I don't even have a brake on mine at this point.  I have ridden it this way for 5 years and it's fun as hell.  I am going to put a front brake on it this season though, I want to be a little safer

BTW, the only maintenance I have done on the bike in those 5 years is 3 chain replacements and some flats.  Literally under 30 minutes of maintenance for 5 years, pretty amazing to me.

Won't you get more exercise if you ride a fixed-gear bike?

Can you use the pedals to brake over there?

Never seen it before but my bike does that, has no pull brakes, you just try to back pedal and that works the brakes.

:awedisgust:

wtf... man I don't know many people who give that much of a fuck about their bikes... I've owned a bike for 10+ years and never given a second thought to 'maintenance'

it's a fucking bike... the only people who should spend that much money on a bike are people competing on it or something.

i dunno, I only just heard about the whole 'fixed gear' thing a couple of months ago, to me it's just another thing to roll my eyes at.

It really depends how much you depend on your bike for transportation.

by the sounds of things it really depends on how gay you are. there is a shop just down the street from me that sells only fixed gear bikes exclusively and ironically enough it's wedged between two faggot hipster clothing stores full of faggot hipsters with rolled up tight jeans and old bowling shoes and faggotry pouring out of their faggotry

god i want to punch them

Man stop recognizing hipsters. Its like the 60's i think. There were the people who created the idea of the "hippie" and then there are the people who noticed them and then caught on. Right now there is no such thing as a hipster, there is only the fucking retard scene jumpers who think its the cool thing right now. The fucking detritivores that have no creativity so they cling to whatever they can that makes them feel cool. It's a bunch of bullshit this whole hipster thing, and it really pisses me off.

By the sounds of it you are a hipster.

Hipster is the leftover emo trash that weren't hardcore enough to be emo that did the gender jump and decided to enhance their gayness into unimaginable regions by mixing their wardrobe with op shops.
