Need help~ updated
    #15900274 - 03/04/12 05:54 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Below is my terrarium

update:

2 new hydrometers arrived. I calibrated them with salt dissolvent. Both of them read between 80-85% RH in my terrarium. So my feeling is correct. The RH inside fruiting chamber is too low. I got confused. I followed everything according to the PF tek. Drill holes on all 6 sides. Lift up the bottom. 4' inch perlite(this time I used a ruler). Why still can not keep the RH?

Tonight my Tropica humidifier will arrive. I hope this can help. Since those cakes has been in dry condition for 3 days. I don't know whether I can save them or not

I used to use a humidifer inside, but it was broken. The hydrometer inside shows that if there was no humidider, the humidity could not reach 90%. I don't know why the humidity is so low. I feel the cakes become dry and I don't know whether it is just my visual. All those cakes have been dunk for 24hrs. The perlite is around 7' high. Everything has been right set according to PF tek guide. I remember using PF tek, there is no need to use the humidifer, just need to spray some water twice a day. It has been 10 days without pins. I don't know whether I need to purchase a new humidifer or just wait? Someone can help me?

is there a fan in that closet? Do you keep the door shut? Pins form when water evaporates so you need airflow for evaporation. A fan not aimed directly at the fruiting chamber may help if you don't have one already.

also if you had a few more cakes in there the RH would be easier to maintain

Those cakes have been consolidated. So according to all your experience, I don't need to use humidifier, just use water spray and fan more?
I saw the hydrometer is showing at 92%. But I doubt the reading. Since last time I put it in the room, after 40 minutes, it showed 80%. I think the normal room humidity can not reach 80%, especially when using air conditioner. Although I have calibrated it by using the wet towel.

Yeah, your hygrometer is probably crap.

but yes, in your OP you said you spray twice a day, I would double or even triple that, also, be sure to fan plenty each time you spray, evaporation is a big pinning trigger.

Is it a digital hygrometer? As we all know they're not accurate at the readings we need them at.  Is that a CFL bulb above your FC? If it's an incandescent it might be hot and creating dry heat.  What is the RH outside your FC?

No, it's a analog hygrometer....

My setup uses about 1" of hydrated and drained perlite, with 7, 1" holes lightly stuffed with polyfill.  To raise the humidity, and deliver constant air exchange, I have two aquarium air pumps (with air stones) running into two separate cups of water.

I also do the 24hr dunk post birthing and have not had trouble with humidity or cake dryness.  F the fanning, invest in a couple pumps!

What kind of bulb though?  Hole spacing looks ok but what size holes?  I bought quite a few different hygrometers before I found a type that actually works.  If you followed the tek to a T, then you should have nothing to worry about unless you live in a desert with 0% RH.

Well just do it as much as you can, spray and fan till you see some water evaporating, wait a little while and do it again.

how can I see the water evaporation? I saw the inside walls are all dry. It is strange. I followed all PF tek instructions, why the humidity is not right?

You mist- there is water everywhere
You fan- there is less water everywhere.
Evaporation, huzzah!

I cant see in the pic, but your FC is lifted by something, correct? you have plenty of air flow underneath the FC?

Also, and again, do you live somewhere dry?
Where in your house is this, closets are no good, as are places with direct air flow from a vent or fan.

I don't know how to install and use the pump. Do you have any video instructions?

And I've always heard around 4-5 inches of perlite is optimum.
I could see how a few more inches could reduce the air flow and therefore humidity.

That's why I asked about the RH outside your FC.  Drips and drops on the inside of FC just indicates a temp difference between the inside and outside of FC.  I've had 98% RH in my FC with dry walls as well.  And if you did follow all the pf tek instructions and that is a CFL bulb not a (regular) incandescent bulb above your FC and there is nothing else around to dry your cakes (fan, ac), you should be fine.

I just took the hydrometer out for half of hour. It showed outside RH was 78%. Now I'm using a wet towel covering it to see whether it can reach 100%. The bulb is CFL for sure.
