wet-smelly nasty contam

Anyone have any good TEKs to prevent against the wet, smells-like-rotten-crotch stuff that appears in PF cakes? Ive sterilized effectively, but from what i hear, this contam can live through the sterilization process. I boil the jars for an hour since i dont have a pressure cooker. This contam has been a big problem for me, since its keeps popping up in spite of sterilization. Thanks!

i dont know a whole lot but have you double boiled before? Do it once like normal, cool over night, boil again? gives contams a chance to germinate a little before you fry them

Good advice. That's fractional sterilization, check cultivation faq.

I think that trev is right, it sounds a lot like wetspot. I've had big problems with the same thing in the past, despite using rice flour and not a grain substrate (which is more susceptible to wetspot). If the stench is bad enough to make you gag, it's probably wetspot. I haven't found a reliable way to eliminate it, but if your re-using the jars that got contaminated, be sure to clean them real good and soak in a bleach solution or disinfectant. You could try pre-sterilizing your substrate components in a microwave. Another idea is once you've prepared your substrate jars, leave them for about 24 hours. As detailed at http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23418 this can encourage the spores to germinate and make them more susceptible to sterilization, as it is the dormant spores that are the hardest to kill. Also, you say that you "boil" your jars; make sure you don't use too much water in the pot, it should come up to about half-way on the jars, as it is the steam that reaches the highest temperatures. Finally, it wouldn't hurt to leave the jars on for a couple of hours as oppose to just one. In my experience, wetspot is fairly infrequent, so remember that even under the most stringent of sterile procedures one or even two jars being contaminated is acceptable if you don't have a pressure cooker. Sterilize the needle of your spore syringe in a hot flame until it turns red prevent the spread of wetspot between jars.
Go on...
