Hey, I wanted to make my own cough syrup. I have some left over propylene glycol but it taste nasty. I was wondering if anyone had an idea on a syrupy food-grade product I could you instead. I was thinking unflavored corn syrup? the stores I check only have vanilla flavor. I can't stand vanilla! If anyone has some good ideas I'm all EARS!

Wow, Can't believe I missed that. This is 100% safe to eat right? I found this at CVS and it claims to be 100% but then why does it say do not eat for external use only?

Vegetable or food grade glycerine should be your best bet.

NO; from the website you linked:
"For external use only. Do not apply over deep or puncture wounds, infections or lacerations unless directed by a doctor. Do not use on. Deep or puncture wounds. Animal bite. Serious burns. When using this product: do not get into eyes. Stop use and ask a doctor if: condition worsens and symptoms last for more than 7 days or clear up and occur again within a few days. Keep out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, seek professional assistance or contact a Poison Control Center immediately. In case of eye contact, flush eyes with running water for 15 minutes. Do not use if tamper evident foil seal under cap is broken or missing."
As astrolopa said, look for food grade glycerine.

Yeah I read that but couldn't that just be liability if it's 99.5% anhydrous glycerine what would make it unsafe to eat if pure glycerine is safe? confusing.
Found this. All glycerin with a "USP" (United States Parmacopoeia) mark is safe for food and cosmetic purposes. Vegetable glycerin can be purchased online at the Netrition link below.
So it is just for liability!

Not to be an asshole, but you should never ever ingest something which clearly is labeled "not for internal use." Liability is there for a reason. Just looking out for ya brother. I'm sure the USP and food grade glycerine will be easy to find. Good luck

One recipe of which you could use is codeine, eucalyptus and mint oils, sugar syrup (as in, from cane or beet, not corn) and ethanol. The codeine is anti-tussative, the rest makes it tasty.
As a kid, my grandad made this formulation and sold it in his pharmacy. Turns out my mother, aunts and uncles all drank it, as did I growing up.
Never knew it had codeine in it.

Yeah well I bought the stuff and it's perfect. Its definitely just straight glycerine sweet tasting and so far no ill effects from ingesting, I read on a bodybuilding forum that many people use the stuff and that it was safe so I went for it. The actual bottle does not have the warning the internet had. It simply says do no apply to open wounds. nothing else.

Ya know, bodybuilders aren't always brain more than brawn. Be sure to drink plenty of water when you take the glycerine as dehydration can occur.

that one works well for me. I've seen versions with (is it glycerine/glycerol that's edible? insert as apporpiate) as well as the other three.
Hell, honey, lemon and whisky is just something I drink normally. I don't need an excuse of a cough to do it.

Update: the glycerin at CVS is edible, ive made about 3 preparations with no ill side effects, did allergy test at first and nothing. it's basically food grade so if anyone is looking for convenient easy to get glycerin go to CVS..it is kind of hard to find tho. check hand lotion aisle.
