How long is too long? (a sterilization question)
    #1588249 - 05/29/03 10:47 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

AFOAF mixed up some brf & verm substrate. She followed Anno's PF-tek for the simple minds to the T, except for one thing. It seems when there was about 15 min left in her boil sterilization (no PC) she fell asleep. She awoke about 7 hours later to find that there was still water in the pot. The pot had a good fitting lid, and was on a very low boil. She immediately cut off the heat, and is allowing them to cool. Also she said the jars don't seem to be waterlogged, or dryed. What if any problems will she face because of this?, any other suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

No colonisation, for instance.

But if you say it looks normal, try it out.

Something like that happened to a friend once and it was still okay. But, like you said, the jars didn't seem to be dryed or have extra water in them.

I've boiled for 2 with no problem.

I've heard of up to 3 hours.

7 hours seems very excessive though.

Its not a problem as long as theyre not too dry or too waterlogged. The substrate should appear damp with no extra water sitting at the bottom. As long as there was water in the pot, the substrate couldnt have reached higher than 100 C, so the substrate positively isnt burnt. Youre fine, proceed normally.

i accidently boiled for 3 hours. One jar cracked so i opened it. The BRF was all cooked smelling. Just to check I opened one of the others and it smelled completly different. Long story short I innoculated the remaing 12 jars and month and a half later I was very pleased with the results!!!

BTW I have also found that during incubation speed is increased greatly by leaving the injection sites clear no tape no tin foil. Let the vermiculate layer be your air filter thats what its for. I have also never came across a species of cubie that wouldn't grow initro. Hop this is helpful to someone.

Thanks for all the response everyone. She was very surprised to find that the water hadnt boiled away completly after 7 hours, but I guess a tight fitting lid is key, I'm sure the very low boil helped aswell. I forgot to mention she did not use lids, just tin foil. She is going to give it a try since everything seems normal she is also going to whip up some more jars that follow anno's tek perfectly in order to compare the results. also I think using just tinfoil as a lid is fine for air exchange.

a slight caramelization is pretty god for fast growth...the problem it finding the right point...I'd sautee the grain to a golden brown but the mycelium doesnt seem to like butter...
