Should I birth with invitro pinning+ spotty top end colonization?
    #15871765 - 02/27/12 05:14 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

My initial instinct is NO, but I'm not sure. My first BRF grow I used pint jars, this time half pints. It took longer the first time but was way more consistent.

This time I used a heating pad initially to keep the temp up but didn't use it past the first week. These are 7 weeks old. Two different strains split in 8 jars. They seem to have slowed, and have odd (to me) mycelium growth. However the bottoms are fully colonized.

There is also some white growth that looks streakier and web like, compared to the mycelium I'm familiar with.

I'm trying to birth these to bulk using coir and the mini mono tek. I went BRF this time because of familiarity, and the last second decision to try my first bulk grow.

Opinions? 4/8 jars are fully bottom colonized, doesn't that mean it's done? Or is that a general rule of thumb with exceptions? The bottoms have been colonized on those for over a week.

They are pinning around the area that looks uncolonized...

In person everything looks natural. Mycelium is white and the BRF+Verm looks normal too.

Im no expert but I have seen cobweb a few times... Aside from that it is also in-vitro pinning meaning most likely a contam or massive stress. The middle of the jar looks highly contaminated with cobweb.

if your intent is to crush it up and spawn it into a bulk sub then go for it.  just remove the large pins/shrooms. That jar does have some wierd rhizomorphic myc but doesnt look like cobweb to me. In the future you will have much better results using wbs for spawning to bulk

I don't think cakes can get cobweb.

Those cakes are pinning early because they have nothing left to colonize.

Probably from bacteria, but iunno.

say what? Cobweb is an opportunistic fungus and it will consume anything, given half a chance.

Edit.

It's highly doubtfull his cake got cobweb pre-birth.

I birthed 8 cakes. Strongest 4 (Costa Rican) with invitro pinning were fully colonized when broken up. Smelled like fresh mushrooms, with no hint of any other scent. That is promising.

I was running late for something so in haste I started popping the last 4 out (Treasure Coast). They were like 80 to 90 percent colonized and smelled more faintly of mushrooms. Again, no contaminate smell.

If I would've waited I probably could have gone 8/12 on my 2nd grow with the 4 failures being bunk syringes. Now I feel confident about one mini-mono. We will see about the 2nd one.

First day off next week gonna make my first attempt at WBS with some LCs.

I'd think it would be tough with a good dry verm layer intact.  Unless you stare at your jars all day, then you'll surely ruined them.
