Cop Tasers Man; Man in Critical Condition
    #15871542 - 02/27/12 04:21 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

GALVESTON, TX (KTRK) -- A man is in critical condition in Galveston after police shocked him with a Taser.

Galveston police say eyewitnesses saw the man jumping off the balcony of a hotel off 61st. Officers checked him out and called paramedics for help. They believe the victim was on something.

Police say while waiting for medical treatment, the man wouldn't follow police commands, so he was hit with a Taser.

According to police, at one point, his heart stopped beating. He was taken to UTMB-Galveston.

Sounds like a PCP story, man starts taking off cloths. If you don't follow police orders you get tased, if you have a bad reaction too bad.

this isnt hippietopie where everything is sunshine and rainbows. most times
now if you dont comply you're getting the taser and these stories you post
arent incidences where some innocent was minding his own business and
suddenly the cops broke out the taser

How do you arrest someone who does not follow orders and is so intoxicated that they are dangerous?  Would you prefer using the club or gun?

Or do you expect them to risk their own lifes by hand cuffing someone with no weapons at all?

i thought tasers were developed as an alternative to deadly force

before cops had them your choices weren't comply or get shot

cops are trained to detain unruly suspects with varying amounts of force

the amount of deaths and injuries caused by tasers is too damn high, and cops are too quick to turn to them as an end-all to any encounter with suspects that may become physical

what's more likely to stop someone's heart, a fall or a sudden jolt of electricity?

I dunno - maybe those drugs he took that made him jump off a balcony had something to do with it?

tasers give too many people heart attacks causeing death, the criminal life is not for the weak of heart.

I'm getting tired of these stupid threads. Always the same story.

Someone does someone stupid,
Cops get involved
Guy doesn't comply
Guy gets hurt.

I think this applies.

The most important point is when he points out the 2000+ uses of non lethal wepons vs the 10- occasions lethal force was needed.

this is a combination of two things:

1. poor training

2. dumb ass cops

it should be standard policy to not use tasers on anyone suspected to be on any substance, especially an amphetamine or pcp, unless deadly force is the only alternative. yes, taking down someone physically carries a risk, but introducing 50k volts to a system that is already running on tilt seems to be much riskier.

some departments train their officers to act in a specific way towards people suspected to be on pcp in order to not provoke or frighten them. there is no reason why they can't keep those tazers holstered for instances like these. a cop's job revolves around discretion, and it seems to me that tasing is starting to replace the crucial ability to discern what to do and how to do it while out in the field more and more. if i recall correctly, the grapevine pd (suburb of dallas) killed a high school kid at a house party who had taken "ecstacy" and was freaking out by tasing him a few years back. they tried to cover up the case but the county coroner came right out and said that the tasing killed him. oddly the news dropped the story shortly after that and i never heard of anyone losing their job or going to jail for manslaughter.

this taser shit is out of control and i wouldn't mind them outright banning them. i'm surprised it hasn't killed more people.
