Identifying Aborts

I've been sorting through some posts, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer. How quickly should a mushroom be growing? The answers I've found are pretty much like this....if the mushroom isn't growing, it's an abort. Makes sense, but this is my first casing ever that I've grown, so I don't know how fast they grow. Like noticeabley in 24 hour periods? 1/8 inch? 1/16 inch? I know the veterans on the board are sick of hearing this, but I have my very first mushroom growing out of my first casing! I feel really good : ) There was something strange though. My jars have been in the dark for about a month (the first 3 weeks were kept too cold, around 68 degrees until I figured out a heating method), and I pulled three out from their jars about 2 days ago. Already on one I have a tiny little mushroom, but I birthed them before any primordia had appeared. Is this normal? The temp in my terranium is a cool 70 degrees with a fish tank bubble, and hand sprayed 3x a day.

My mushroom hasn't stalled yet, it just appeared out of nowhere. Are you using a humidty gauge? I'm debating on whether to buy one. Everything seems to be going good. Hopefully I'll have enough in a few weeks for a friend and me to eat.

Aborts have like a faint blackish color to the pin(about to be cap) of the mushroom. If you have a bunch of fairly large mushrooms and some small ones that have not grow in about two days I would suggest taking them off (more or likley aborts, if not slow growers that will effect the other flushes)

you can easily identify ahborts by a destinctive blue/purple bruising that runs all the way around the edge of the cap. note: i usually remove ahborts after i have cropped the entire flush. dont pick ahborts while your flush is still growing.

I'm pretty sure I have at least half of my first casing aborting due too overwatering...the pins that seem to have aborted have not moved in the last couple days and have a darker brown than the pins that are doing good....I'm not upset tho cause I think I isolated the prob and I got another casing with a great pinset....this time I'm gonna ease up on misting

i have seen pins turn black (the cap at least) and have watched them for like a week and they still haven't rotted. they just slowly turn black and then they just sit there and chill so you shouldn't be hurried to pick them - just get them before they start decomposing and turning mushy-looking. is it important to wait for them to turn black before picking? doesa caramel-colored abort differ in potency from a black-headed abort? i've tripped black aborts before and they are sa-weet. peace.
