Sound driver question
    #1586776 - 05/29/03 12:23 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I have an Hewlet Packard comp I bought about a year ago with Win XP. A while ago I stopped getting any sound. I switched speakers, but still nothing. So how can I fix this? Someone told me my driver is shot, and to download a new driver, but I don't know where to get one. Is this my problem, and what do I need to do to fix it? I'm pretty computer retarded, so I need someone to help me out here.

Try going to the HP web site and looking (typically in the Support area of the site) for your model computer. They'll probably have downloads for every driver for every bit of hardware that model comes with.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. Do I have to remove my current driver?

Sorry. Didn't get back for a couple days.

If it's a upgrade from a previous version then, generally, no. If it's from a different source (like you're installing a new sound card) then you probably should.

If you're still using the original sound hardware in your PC that it came with then I wouldn't bother removing the old driver.

Removing the old driver shouldn't hurt anything.

Get to the Control Panel.

From there go to System.

Find the Device Manager.

From there you should be able to figure it out (I hope).

Have you already downloaded the driver?

superpimp, stop pimping and open up your box. check to see what brand and model of sound card you have. go the manufacturer's website and download the driver corresponding to your sound card and operating system. remove any sound drivers you have installed. after that reboot and then follow the installations instructions from the manufacturer. In the case that you have an on-board sound device ( the sound hardware is part of your motherboard ), you need to download the drivers from the board manufacturer.

good luck!

I got it fixed. Strumpling walked me through it because I am too dim to be able to do it myself. He is truly a gentleman and a scholar. He's my hero.
