Hmm ok interesting, never really had any issues with various forms of tape. Masking tape is easier to work with anyway, so why not use it. Electrical tape can work but again, not as easy to work with and may melt as was noted.

I wouldn't think electrical tape would allow any air flow so I def would go with masking

I use to use any tape I could get my hands on and can stand a PCing. As soon as I saw myc start to grow the tape came off anyway and I'd put a coffee filter on as a dust cover. Seemed to work.

A foaf was using electrical tape with absolutely NO problems. What he did was this:
Two holes were drillled in the lid, one about 3/8"-1/2", the other just 1/8" and off to the side (big enough to fit a syringe into). The smaller hole was taped over with a small piece of electrical tape. The big hole was left open, but a tyvek filter was placed over the jar opening under the lid (or polyfill would be used in the big hole, when tyvek was not available).
After pressure cooking, the electrical tape held up fine and actually melted slightly onto the lid, making an even BETTER seal. When inoculating, the tape over the small hole was wiped with alcohol, then the syringe was stabbed directly through the tape into the small hole (it's easy to see the small depression beneath the tape). After pulling the syringe from the hole, a fresh piece of electrical tape was applied over the original piece to cover the freshly pierced hole.
This method never caused a problem, except maybe trying to unwrap a fresh piece of tape with latex gloves on. The electrical tape adheres very strongly to latex!

I used electrical tape for years with no problems in a PC. All grades were used.. even colors. I switched to it after using masking tape early on. Masking tape would meldew.

Masking tape only mildews if you are too lazey to change it or have an improper incubator. Fucking around with cakes and FRESH masking tape:

Whats up ninjas? I use freezer tape. 97 cents at the "mart" sticks to anything wet or dry.
