turning cakes upside down?
    #1586214 - 05/28/03 09:17 PM (14 years, 30 days ago)

I could've swore I read somewhere here on this site, that you can turn jars upside down, to possibly speed up the growth on the bottom of the cake. Now I can't find it. MaybeI was seeing things.... Does this work, or would it hurt the cakes in someway?

It will work. Even better if the holes on your jars are open.

what do yo mean if the holes are open? the jars are innoculating with the tin foil over the tops of the jar lids(holes are punched of corse). Do you mean removing the tinfoil, then plcng them upside down?

Remove any tape or foil you have and put the upside down. Make sure where they are its very sterile. Good luck!!

removing tinfoil/tape & flipping = gas/air exchange = mushies finally get some fresh air

umm turning the cakes upside down is to let co2 be released.. co2 is heavier then air and when turned upside down it will seep out the holes. Other then that there is no real reason to turn them upside down. The only reason you should in the first place is if your cakes are slowing down

For a little added protection, you could place coffee filter held with rubber band over top to cover the holes but not tight enough not to prevent air exchange.

What is afoaf?

So I'm being told it's for air exchange, (out with the bad in with the good)
are they to be flipped back over once this is done? Is it going to hurt them if they remain upside down through the rest of the innoculation period.
(they are slowing down, the bottoms are having a hard time. It is my belief that they are little dry, but Iwanted to try something else before I have to rehydrate)

I have the opposite problem, Im also having trouble colonizing the bottoms of the jars, but there seems to be a bit of moisture accumulating on the bottoms of the jars when they are flipped since the bottoms don't have holes. I already removed the tape on my jars to alleviate some of the condensation inside. hope it works.

i get moistur as well on the bottom(AKA now the tops, cause they're flipped)
but the subsrtate still looks a little dry inside. I flipped everything i have, and got a few to finish they're process, but the magority of them are taking a while.
So far it all looks promising. Just put six jars this morning into the fruiting chamber.

If the cakes have stalled on the bottom I've found if you turn the jars bottoms up and tap them into your hand so the substrate pulls away from the bottom of the jar and then leave the jar flipped it promotes faster growth...  Road agrees with me on this one.
